Broke Ass Summer Jam History and Info
The Broke Ass Summer Jam show was originally done and created in East Oakland in the nineties by underground legends Mystik Journeymen (comprised of Sunspot Jonz and Luckyiam.PSC) in support of their magazine Unsigned and Hella Broke.
Historically Broke Ass Summer Jam has been a show that has attracted crowds of thousands, profiled underground acts from around the West, and has maintained the Do it Yourself ethic that is so clearly instilled into the minds of its successful independent artists.
There was a time when you couldnt even get a show in Oakland unless you was gangsta! Them fools came in and started creating their own scene by throwing shows and involving other MCs to be a part of their stuff and from all that building a community from it all! I would go to their shows to watch the acts but also sell my cds because I knew the crowd was open to the underground a past attendee states about the Mystik Journeymen and the past UHB shows.
We would throw weekly shows at La Pena and other places and then the finale with all the best groups would be Broke Ass Summer Jam! Luckyiam.PSC states with a smile.
The last Broke Ass Summer Jam was held in September 2003 at the Fillmore in San Francisco to a sold out crowd of screaming fans. It is noteworthy to know that when we use the term broke we mean the talented starving artist without radio airplay that are too broke to pay the tons of money to promote themselves against the corporate mainstream filth and sludge. The show is also for the broke MCs that are rocking without major deals, dirt hustling standing on corners, slanging their albums while doing shows for nothing more than the rush and love. In the rap market today the major corporations promote the untalented monotonous MC who only raps about money and Hoes while the truly talented original MC will always be pushed to the side unnoticed. These are the contributing factors of why corporate racism exist in America today allowing only the ignorant urban point of view to be seen leaving stereotype byproducts to contaminate the point of views of the weak minded and fearful.
This show is being produced by Tha Dream Academy which is in the business of changing the world one syllable at a time. When asked Sunspot about his Dream Academy organization he explains "Were allowing the youth to see that you dont have to give in to all the pseudo archetypes created by an industry of fascist clown dictators trying to corporate thug you into buying or believing their shit!" He also adds "The Dream Academy is all about changing the world with our dreams and building from past nightmares against all odds!" You got to dirt hustle you're way to the top!"
The Legends have certainly shown you can do something smart and intelligent and still be successful. You can build independently and tunnel through any genre and market yourself as something new and original and the public will still love you. All it takes is talent, hard drive, and work! This is an event/workshop with an afternoon movie and panel sponsored by the Hip Hop film festival and tha Dream Academy. The show will also be a benefit for the Eastside Arts Alliance catering to youth involvement in the arts and entertainment. This is a chance for the Legends to actually give something back to the breeding/stomping ground they helped create and build in Oakland! Keep the underground alive!!
