New Tracks:The Bassistry -track EP ‘Try This’ was produced by Marcel Pusey & Cassell ‘the beatmaker.’ (The Streets, Akala, Plan B).
There is something familiar and different about these tracks. ‘Leave’ has all the classic Bassistry trademarks, the Soul, Funk and Jazz influences. Essentially it’s a blues track with a heavy bubbling funk bassline. Cassell’s beats. Katy Seath and Nicola Bull produce a superb performance with vocal harmonies through stepping up on each verse throughout the track. Alex Bennett (Corrine Bailey Rae, BNH) keyboard invention and deft touch sits in the groove, alongside Jules Faife’s minimalist funk guitar pickings. The track is a cheeky look at ‘leaving all your worldly goods to save your sanity’.
‘Try This’ is a more atmospheric, ambient Zero 7 influenced track. Exploring the hyped world of celebrity, and instant success. The groove lays back and its simple chord structure is characterised by Alex’s beautiful jazz tinged piano variations. The minimal bass line is similar to Erykah Badu’s ‘On and On,’ combined with Jules acoustic guitar provide an open backdrop for reflective Katy’s soulful voice.
Mad About You has been remixed for BBC Radio 1by dance DJ Kissy Sellout, and played on BBC 6 Funk and Soul Show. It’s Only is a heartfelt relationship inspired track, styled as a hymn. Katy Seath vocals are the highlight of the track alongside Eric Apapapoulay on guitar and Alex’s wonderful organ lines. Unspoken, is an abstract groove featuring Nicola on lead vocals.
History - Bassistry, the band were formed by composer/bassist, Marcel Pusey in 1995. ‘Bassistry’ their self-titled Jazz Groove debut album was released in 1996 through German Indie label, Okapi Records. It featured pianist Dave Maric (Steve Martland Band, Katia & Maria Labeque), Mervin Samuels (Saxophones), Cynthia Simmons (Voice), Philippe d’Amonville (drums) and Andrew Tween (Percussion). Bassistry performed in Germany and in the UK.
In Time - In Time, was released in 2005. Featuring some of London’s most exciting young players, Duncan Mckay, (Incognito, Primal Scream, etc), Sam Agard (Polona Faith, Corrinne Bailey Rae), Alex Bennett (Corinne Bailey Rae), Jamie Trowell, Jules Faife (Netsayi) and two fantastically gifted vocalists, Katy Seath and Nicola Bull. In Time was released through HR Records and was reviewed by Jazzwise Magazine as ‘like Incognito and Brand New Heavies but a little grittier. In these days of hackney formulaic radio friendly music this bands raw musicality is refreshing.’
