What's in a name? Are they blues bastards? Yes, in fact they are! Because Bastardi di Blues (often referred to by their initials, BdB) don't play the blues in the traditional way. True, they are a typical power trio, a traditional blues and rock band format popularized in the 1960s, with a lineup of blues guitar, bass and drums. And it's also true that their songs include traditional rock shuffles, slow blues rhythms, heavy licks, chords and bass patterns, besides rather extensive jams that highlight the virtuosity of their frontman and guitarist Johan van de Beek. But the way they perform their music on stage is quite unconventional, making use of some of the latest computer technics and samples, sometimes even interspersed with a voice-over of for instance one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century: Jimi Hendrix. In short: BdB is a traditional power trio in an unorthodox, modern way. Bastardi di Blues is a Dutch, Limburg-based band, which was formed in the cold winter of 2009, when the financial crisis, the climate crisis en the food crisis were hitting on the world like hell. Is there a better time to start a band? Hardly! BdB seems a bizarre threesome: guitarist Johan Bastardi has been playing the blues for many years, but has little band experience. Nevertheless, he leads this innovative trio with his heavy, wailing, sometimes bombastic or even tender guitar solos. BdB leave him all the room for improvisation and creativity. With his virtuos guitar and vocal talent he inspires the rhythm section, which consists of Monique Demarteau on bass and vocals, and Rene Vlems on drums and percussion. Monique has her roots in the punk rock scene, Rene has played in various jazz and rock bands. You might say that in Bastardi di Blues the parallel worlds of electro, blues, jazz, rock and punk return to their roots: blues as blues can get. You will like it, for sure!
