It seems like every other day a new band is coming out claiming to have a really unique sound and an unforced, natural presence about them. After checking into their music, you’ll usually find that they sound very similar to at least 20 other bands. If you get to see them in concert, you’ll likely notice that they stand like a statue and act disinterested…. Or they hop up and down like they’re on a pogo stick. And every now and then, they’ll bust out one of their signature moves or poses that they practiced in front of the mirror.
And then, there is BASTION… one of those rare bands that truly have a unique sound quality and a natural stage presence. With a dark and moody, hard-edged pop sensibility, BASTION has a cross-over appeal that has amassed an army of teenaged fans, baby boomers and everyone in between. Their music creates a sound that blends a menagerie of rock, post-punk and harmonious undertones. They manage to produce aching melodies with driving rhythm sections reminiscent of the best artists from the 80’s, yet BASTION does not sound the least bit dated.
When asked about the band’s unique sound, drummer Greg Slone responds, “I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we are a trio. We certainly aren’t trying to sound like any other band…. But we aren’t going out of our way to avoid it either. We just try to write the best songs we can. Three-piece rock bands have always had an advantage in sounding more original…. Cream, ZZ Top, The Police, King’s X, Nirvana, Green Day, Blink 182, Muse… I could list bands forever. There’s just something special about a really good trio.”
Singer / bassist Brad Wilkins explains, “Our music can be dark and angry…but it can also be powerful, energetic and uplifting. Good songs enable you to experience little snapshots of life. We try to explore and exploit the reality of many different moods.”
As far as their live show….BASTION’s members allow themselves to get absorbed in the music and the energy they get from the crowd. They don’t stand stiff or act disinterested and they don’t practice their poses for the camera. They let the music and their audience lead the way. ”At a BASTION concert, we create something that is living and breathing….it can only happen once,” says guitarist Don Gauck. “The collaboration of instruments, voices and fans is never the same again. Every performance creates its own energy…its own unique signature.”
