Batala Bangor has evolved from Samba Bangor Community Music, which was formed in 1995 to promote the spirit of carnival and it’s associated arts in North Wales, through the performance of percussion based music at carnivals, fairs, festivals and private venues. Our inspiration comes from the songs, rhythms and culture of Brazil and the Latin world. As well as our regular weekly rehearsals we have organised weekend and day-long workshops for the general public - we are always open to new players and new ideas.
In 2003 Samba Bangor was invited to join the Batala family - a select group of bands from England, France and Belgium - guided by mestre Giba Goncalves and playing his original samba reggae music. The Europe-wide family now includes bands in Barmouth, Liverpool, Lancaster, Portsmouth, Paris, Nantes, La Rochelle and Brussels. Having a shared repertoire means that batala players can come together to play - as do 80 to 100 players every August Bank Holiday at the Notting Hill Carnival and, most recently, at the International Encontro in Liverpool in September 2006, which 15 Bangor players attended.
