About me:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

WHAT IS Bat Country Radio?:

FIRST THINGS FIRST - I. DON'T. PLAY. COUNTRY. MUSIC!!!
[exception: Mike Ness]

I don't care what they say - any so-called rock radio station that sees nothing wrong with playing "Stairway to Heaven", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Freebird" like 1000 motherfucking times a week deserves to spend eternity in Guantanafuckingmo Bay - that's not Radio, that's GROUNDHOG DAY RADIO. It's a cancer, a blight and a miserable soul-sucking scourge on the airwaves - and BCR is the fucking cure. It's nothing less than the best goddamned rock radio show in Tucson, if not the entire state [that nobody knows about]...120 minutes of pure, free-form sonic bliss that airs every Saturday morning from 3-5 a.m. [AZ TIME] on Community Radio 91.3 FM KXCI in Tucson, Arizona.

If you're outside Southern Arizona, you can listen online by following this link.

I play a mix of classic and current stuff, mainly drawn from (but by no means limited to) the garage/punk, metal/thrash and alternative/grunge/stoner rock bands of the '70's to the present and seasoned with occasional bits of comedy, satirical news. op-ed and spoken word type-stuff....sometimes it's all about the metal, sometimes it's more punk, sometimes more alt-grunge, but it's never the same from week to week.

And a couple more things - I'm sorry if this makes me uncool or unhip or whatever, but I have no interest whatsoever in promoting local music for the sake of promoting local music, or in adding every single band that sends me a request. I say this because I had a local acoustic/indie/emo/alt-country/whatever solo artist get really fucking offended when I denied his add request.

As much as it may offend or piss people off, I only add bands/artists that are in the general neighborhood of the genres I've described above and see no fucking sense in adding "Billy Joe Jim Bob and His Inbred Jug-Band Ensemble" if I never play Jug-Band music - which I don't - so there.

Who I'd like to meet:
Anyone thoroughly disgusted with the perpetual Groundhog Day of mind-numbing repetition that IS terrestrial rock radio.

People sick of the syndicated swill being churned out by the likes of Alice Cooper and Dee Snider on a certain so-called "Real Rock Station" whose name I will not mention here.

No, I don't have any stories about chemically deranged rock stars, but honestly now, who gives a fat rat's ass about that crap?

I've been chemically deranged enough times in my life and seen my fair share of weird, wild and twisted stuff, so I'm sure I can pull a story out of thin air from time to time.

Hey now!

We've got two very different shows coming up in the next five days: Hot Buttered Rum and Misfits

Saturday Nov 14 An Evening With Hot Buttered Rum at the Orpheum. Initially formed as an acoustic string band, seven years of constant touring has transformed Hot Buttered Rum into a plugged-in, percussive powerhouse that wows critics and fans alike. Their left-coast rock reveals an access to jazz, country, and world music that few groups can match. While the band's music belies simple categorization, its songwriting and stage chemistry delights listeners at every turn. Doors at 7, show at 8. All Ages. Tix are only $12 advance/$15 day of.

Tuesday Nov 17 Misfits with Hour of the Wolf, Moonlight Howlers, and Awaken the Nightmare. Misfits are the original horror punk band. Original members Jerry Only and Robo play bass and drums, and guitar is covered by Dez Cadena, originally of Black Flag. Doors at 7, show at 8. Tix are $22 advance/$25 day of.

Also coming up soon:
12/2 Voodoo Glow Skulls with Fayuca @ Downtown Greenhouse (Behind Green Room)-All Ages

Hey now!

This Saturday night we are throwing a Halloween Party at the Orpheum with Yin Yang and Zen Some. Sedona superfreaks Yin Yang and Zen Some know how to throw a party. Its actually impossible to convince them not to dress up in costumes during the 364 days of the year that are not Halloween. That's why we thought that they would be a particularly appropriate band to play Halloween. YYZS plays a an eclectic mix of music, focusing on 80s songs that don't suck (think New Wave, Talking Heads, etc...). So put on your freakiest outfit and come down to the Orpheum to dance. Bwahahahahaha!

The show is all ages, ONLY $5, and starts at 9pm.

Also coming up soon:
11/4 Minus the Bear with The Antlers and Twin Tiger @ Orpheum-All Ages
11/14 An Evening with Hot Buttered Rum @ Orpheum-All Ages (A GREENBUILD GREENSTREETS Event see www.usgbcaz.org/northern/greenstreets for more information. )

Hello music lover!

We are presenting several events this weekend and wanted to give all y'all a big headsup.

Thursday Frank Rosaly's Milkwork will be at the Coconino Center for the Arts. Frank was an NAU jazz student in the 90s. He has since toured nationally and internationally and plays with a slew of acts in Chicago (including one group with Wilco guitarist Nels Cline). This show is a solo drum concert that explores the process of free-improvisation with the use of both acoustic and electronically manipulated percussion. Show starts at 7:30. Tix are $10 in advance and $12 day of.

Also on Thursday Lake Tahoe group Blue Turtle Seduction will bring their jamtastic bluegrass/rock/funk/fusion to the Green Room with special guests Brothers Gow. Show starts at 9pm. $7 at the door.

Friday night Washington DC roots reggae rockers SOJA hit the Green Room with The Movement and The Hounds. SOJA brings the party with their neo-roots vibe, bad-ass musicality and great lyrics and vocals. Tix are $12 in advance and $15 day of show. Showtime is 9pm. (SOJA will also be at Club Red in Tempe with The Movement, Another Day, The Hounds, DJ Jah Mek and Pickster One on 10/10 and the Rock in Tucson on 10/11).

Saturday night brings the return of March Fourth Marching Band. March Fourth is a 30-piece freaky-stylee marching band complete with stilt walkers, burlesque dancers, jugglers, a huge horn section, lots of drummers, and more. Local vaudevillians Circus Bacchus to open. Cover is $10 at the door and show starts at 9pm.

Last but not least, we are presenting the Shangri-La Chinese Acrobats at Prochnow Auditorium on Tuesday October 13th. Their multi-faceted and multi-cultural production features dazzling acrobatic displays, formidable feats of daring and balance, explosive energy, brilliant costumes, with a touch of Chinese comedy. Hello music lovers!

Motown legends the Temptations will be at Prochnow Auditorium on NAU Campus this Saturday September 26th. Doors are at 7, show is at 8pm and its all ages. The Temptations are known for their plethora of hits including My Girl, Ain't Too Proud To Beg, The Way You Do The Things You Do, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Cloud Nine, I Wish It Would Rain, Ball of Confusion, and I Can't Get Next To You to name a few.

Their show consists of a 23-piece band doing all the classic soul music you can handle.

Also, don't miss the Red Elvises at the Green Room on Friday September 25th. Doors at 8, show at 9. The Red Elvises play "kick-ass music from Siberia." Thie sound includes rock’n roll, surf, rockabilly, reggae, lounge and traditional Russian styles of music. Believing that one cannot go wrong with “The King” Elvis Presley as an inspiration and with “red” being not only their favorite color but the national color of their native country, the band name Red Elvises was created. Their show is not only rockin, but also pretty funny.

What's shakin' yo!

This Monday internationally acclaimed DJ and performance artist Shpongle comes to Flagstaff's Green Room. A new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford's studio production. His international fan base has flowered from country-wide to world-wide in the last ten years. This year alone he has played over 16 sell out gigs around the world, each with a capacity of over 1500 people, in Australia, Israel, New York, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Moscow, Geneva, Montreal, and Tokyo to name just a few.

Joining Shpongle will be VJ Zebbler who does sick projections as well as Arche Dream for Humankind, a blacklight mask and dance troupe. This event is going to be amazing and if you like trippy world beat/electronica you will dig!

Upcoming shows:

Hola Amigos!

This show is coming up next week, and it one of those shows that is near and dear to my heart. Jason Isbell is a phenomenal musician, and you would be a fool to miss his first ever Flagstaff appearance. Check it:

Former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell will be at the Green Room in Flagstaff on Monday March 30th (show at 8pm) with his band the 400 Unit. Isbell was known as one of the best songwriters, singers, and guitarists in DBT, and has since branched out and just released his second solo album. His music is a beautiful blend of southern rock & soul, alt-county, and just great songwriting.

Here are a couple live clips:

Justin Townes Earle played in his father Steve Earle's band before setting off on his own. With inspirations as diverse as Townes Van Zandt (he was named in honor of the elder Earle’s hero), Jimmy Reed, Kurt Cobain, The Replacements, Ray Charles and The Pogues, Justin forged his own brand of American roots music

Here he is live:
