Battala Rockstars Creator, Kris Christie, decided to start Battala RockStars because ?people were complaining about the lack of a platform for bands to gain exposure in Canada.? Launched in January 2008, Battala RockStars is a grassroots company that creates an opportunity of opening doors for unsigned bands exposing them to prominent members of the music industry, new fans, while gaining media coverage.
Over 200 bands signed up for the very first Battala RockStars, held in Toronto, with only the top 16 making the cut. Bands competed tournament style over several rounds on two different stages using their original material in a song-for-song fight. The competing bands ultimately tried to outplay their opponents for the Battala RockStars title. At the end of each round, bands were critiqued by a panel of Battala RockStars music industry professionals on creativity, musicianship, performance and song writing capabilities. Some of the esteemed panel consisted of music journalist Karen Bliss (Lowdown on the Canoe Jam), Producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Three Days Grace) and founder of Skate4Cancer Rob Dyer and added to the line up this year Edwin (formally of I Mother Earth) and Darrin Pfeiffer (Goldfinger, Edge 102.1FM, Gibson).
Battala RockStars has set out to become the leading platform for launching Canadian talent receiving media attention from CTV's eTalk Daily, MuchMusic Online, CityTV News, and many credible print and online outlets. The unique event seeks out the 'next big thing', making stops in ten cities across Canada, giving homegrown talent an opportunity to develop and gain exposure, all the while giving the music industry a place to find their next big investment.
Battala Rockstars Announce Judges
Battala Rockstars is pleased to announce its Toronto panel of judges. Music journalist Karen Bliss (RollingStone, Billboard) and Juno award-winning music producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent/Three Days Grace) return for a second year. Joining them this year on the panel is drummer for Goldfinger Darrin Pfeiffer and a new host for battle nights, 102.1 The Edge after dark personality LoriAnn Villani. These esteemed industry professionals will judge each battle on the band’s creativity, musicianship, performance and song writing capabilities.
Karen Bliss is an established music journalist whose work has appeared in Rolling Stones, Billboard, Elle Canada and dozens of other publications. She has interviewed some of the world's most famous musicians such as Kurt Cobain, Shania Twain, Jimmy Page, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, and hundreds more. She also published an anti-racism children picture book, The Girl With Pinhead Parents, available from maplemusic.ca, with a portion of the proceeds going to War Child Canada.
Gavin Brown Canadian record producer and musician who has produced material for bands such as Three Days Grace, Billy Talent, Cancer Bats, The Reason, The Tea Party, Sarah Hammer and many more. His first production credit, Danko Jones "My Love Bold" won a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album. Darrin Pfeiffer is one busy man. Besides being the drummer for the LA pop/punk band Goldfinger for the last 15 years which sends him all over the world playing shows, he also spends his time as an on air DJ at 102.1 The Edge as well as being a rep. for Gibson Guitars Canada. When he?s not doing any of that, he?s running his own independent record label (High 4 Records), signing bands and releasing records. If he finds any free time he also manages a few bands as well as book and promote shows including Wakestock amongst others.
Toronto frontman Edwin, formerly of multi-platinum rock act I Mother Earth, has had an equally successful solo career with albums Another Spin Around The Sun, Edwin & The Pressure and Better Days, but has now joined forces with drummer Jeff Burrows (The Tea Party), guitarist Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace) and bassist Amir Epstein (Zygote) to form another rock band, appropriately title Crash Karma. The band will make its live debut sometime this summer.
The competition, an innovative take on a battle of the bands concept, will have 32 competing bands battling it out this summer with only one WINNER. Bands will compete using original material in a song for song battle ultimately trying to outplay their opponents while being judged by the panel of judges. The winning band will receive a grand prize of a $10, 000 demo, a national tour and a Toronto Indie Week prize package, which includes a headlining spot in the Indie Week finals showcase in October 2009, VIP passes for the Festival, a write up in the Indie Week pamphlet and more.

We all know all too well that it is difficult for an indie band to get air plays on radio. Battala Rockstars is running a Demo Contest--One Band Will Be Selected to Play The Hard Rock Cafe Alongside the Battala Rockstars 2009 Winner this September, 2009
MUST DROP DEMO OFF BETWEEN 8PM AND 9PM @ THE REVERB THIS WEDNESDAY.
Starting June 10th, we will have a Demo Drop Box available at The Reverb for every Battle until the end of Round Two where you can place your DEMO to be reviewed by the Battala Rockstars Crew!
The Winning Band will be announced at the Finals on August 26th at The Reverb and will play alongside the 2009 Battala Rockstars Winning Band at a Showcase in September, 2009.
