Sounds Like
Steve Bing & The Bayou Hotshots sound like a big pot of gumbo tastes. You mix many great ingredients to get that superb flavor. Mix those musical sounds to give your ears a flavor you savor over and over again. It is musical gumbo for the ears!
Steve Bing & The Bayou Hot Shots are a band that plays a high-energy mix of music that will have you movin' around the dance floor or at least tappin' a foot. Their huge eclectic repertoire includes the danceable rhythms of Cajun and Creole music. Depending on the venue we also play a mix of Western Swing (sometimes called Texas Swing), New Orleans-style jazz swing, Swamp Pop, and Hillbilly Old Timey from such famous bands as the Hackberry Ramblers, the Skillet Lickers, and Hank Williams Drifting Cowboys. Good harmony vocals are a big thing with the band too.
Steve Bing plays fiddle, Cajun accordion, and is the lead singer. His Cajun and Creole musical influences are drawn from performing on stage with many great Louisiana musicians including Luderin Darbone, Goldman Thibodeaux, Ed Poullard, Corey Ledet, Charles Thibodeaux, Lee Benoit, Sammy Naquin, Cedric Watson, Scotty Pousson, Larry Miller and others. He also lived for a time in Texas and was influenced by the music of Bob Wills from bands such as the Hot Club Of Cowtown, Asleep At The Wheel, and others. Steve also toured nationally with the famous folk singer/musician Glenn Yarbrough playing six different instruments in the Havenstock River Band which is Glenn's "back-up" band. Steve's fiddling styles include Cajun, Creole, Swing, Old-Timey, Bluegrass, and Country. Steve is a full-time musician and is also a music teacher on Cajun accordion, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and bass. He also calls old-timey squares and contra dances when the need arises and plays fiddle in an old-time string band the "Laughing Lizards". Having also lived in southern Kentucky, Steve was commissioned an honorary "Kentucky Colonel" in 1990 for his work with creating entertainment programs for World War II Pear Harbor survivors and military veterans. Donna Bing provides the solid rhythm guitar in the band and harmony vocals. And, when the music requires some of her other talents, she plays the snare drum, keyboard and bass. She loves to dance as much as playing music, often at the same time. Her musical influences are many including having sung with the Houston Symphony Chorus. Steve and Donna recorded a traditional "creole music" CD with Goldman Thibodeaux, legendary creole accordion player from Lawtell, LA. The CD is entitled Goldman Thibodeaux with Steve & Donna Bing - "French Creole House Dance". It was considered for a Grammy nomination in 2008. As members of "Renaissance Cadienne", Steve and Donna play traditional Cajun music for this world-touring stage and theater dance troupe which is based out of Lafayette, La. Jesse Deroche has been playing Cajun accordion since an early age and by age 10 was performing at restaurants and festivals across Louisiana. He learned how to play and build accordions from his great-Uncle Andrew Jagneaux of Church Point, LA. Kevin Landry plays rhythm and lead guitar whether it's his favorite modern acoustic or his vintage "f" hole guitar from the 1950's. He plays the solid chordal structure on the Cajun repertoire and provides "tasteful" lead breaks reminescent of the old dance hall sound. He also plays the classy jazzy rhythm that is so important in the "Swing" music that the Hot Shots play. In addition, he plays the saxophone on the Swamp Pop repertoire. Kevin is a native Louisiana Cajun and also teaches guitar. Dave Porter is the quintessential banjo player and plays both fingerpicking and "clawhammer" styles. His musical influences and styles include everything the Hot Shots play and then some. He is smoothly comfortable on the banjo no matter what the tune requires of his talents. As a side note, Dave's chemistry teacher in the Fort Worth High School was the fiddle player for the Light Crust Doughboys so how cool is that? So growing up in Texas was a great influence on Dave's liking for Texas Swing. Dave also plays the triangle and rubboard which is the extra percussion needed for Cajun and Creole music. Another Louisiana native, Jacob Oubre is a top-rated mandolin player who has influences from old-timey, bluegrass, swing and other genres. Jacob's superb musicianship adds a 'ho-nutha dimension to the band's sound. Jacob also plays the electric bass. Albert Moyer, Jr. (our Texas drummer), has a wide variety of musical genre experience. He can be seen behind the band swaying to a waltz, rocking a two-step, twirling his sticks, or during the breaks eating crawfish. To read more about Albert drop by his myspace at www.myspace.com/albertmoyerjr Steve Bing & the Bayou Hot Shots play the best of the best music that defines the spicy gumbo sounds of Louisiana, the Swing Sounds of Country Jazz from Texas and New Orleans, and old time Southern and Appalachian tunes.
