Don't Hate Comments
When I was 9 years old, my best friend and I saved our $ for weeks to get a Real China Tea Party Set. When we went to buy it, we discovered we were 10 cents short because we hadn't allowed for tax. There was a lady in line ahead of us who gave us the 10 cents, and as she gave it to us, she said "Someday you will have an opportunity to help someone else. Maybe it will be with a dime or maybe it will be some other way. The way you can repay me is by sharing with others." I'm interested in ying/yang: sharing positive, creative, soul-filled energy with kindred spirits who will share altruistically with the ultimate goal of making the world a better, more peaceful and loving place.

This is the true joy of life – the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one, the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
George Bernard Shaw
The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.

Beach Poetry is a unique performance poetry venue that has been a dynamic part of the cultural climate of Chicago since 1990. Such greats as Maureen Flannery, Andrea Change, Carlos Cortez, Lisa Buscani, the Aztec Dancers, Malachi Abaja, Marc Smith, Michael Warr and Neal Pollack have been featured here. Beach Poetry was founded by award-winning poet and playwright, Cathleen Schandelmeier on North Avenue Beach when the venue where she was hosting shut down for renovation. The Beach Poets earned Schandelmeier the title "Poet Laureate of North Ave Beach" by the Chicago Tribune in 1996. The Beach Poets have also appeared on "Wild Chicago". This amazing happening is now located at Loyola Beach, on Greenleaf and the lake, The Beach Poets takes place
from 4 pm-5:30 pm every Sunday afternoon in the summer. Look for the Beach Poets tent South of the Heartland's "Stand in the Sand" and be sure to bring poetry (your own or someone else's) for the round-robin open "mic"!
Children and pets are always welcome!

The Beach Poets began in 1990, when Cathleen was hosting a poetry reading at Sheffield's School St. Cafe. She had 30 poets show up, as well as a feature, only to be informed that the venue was closed for renovation. Left with no where to perform, Cathleen loaded everyone into her '74 VW Beetle (ok other's had cars too) and off they went to North Avenue Beach. Little did they realize that history was being made that night - not in the history of the world has another poetry reading endured on the Beaches of Lake Michigan for 16 consecutive years! Every reading in the summer features a round robin style open "mic", an incredible featured poet, as well as music and poetry by the talented Schandelmeier/Bartels family. (Cathleen married Peter C. Bartels in 1999).

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Believe in yourself And all you are worth Trust that you were put here To serve a great purpose on this earth You have the abilities Many capabilities To transform yourself Into a powerhouse of wealth
You just have to learn To tap into your resources Which are buried within Allow your talents to flourish, allow yourself to win You can be and do all things If you learn to trust yourself and believe Allow your mind to open up While your blessings of life are received
Many times we claim to be failures Because we figured we've tried enough And to no avail we didn't succeed But there is a lesson we must heed If we've tried one way We need to try another The dream that is inside of you Still has a light, it still has a flutter
For if it didn't Your mind would be at ease But its not So this is your moment to seize Don't buy into negativity Its never gotten anyone anywhere but down You are looking to excel above and beyond And all around
Your thoughts become your actions So act on your dreams I'm willing to bet you They are closer than they seem Learn to LOVE yourself Because nothing can move forward if you don't Let go of negative people, thoughts, feelings Release yourself of that pain and hurt
Once you have turned your attitude Into a positive motivating force You are ready To win life's obstacle course So just know that without any doubt You are a winner and destined to succeed All you have to do Is work hard at what you desire & continue to believe
