One became a grandfather at 36. Another came into the world as a result of a rape - when his mother was just 13. And one grew up watching his father on skid row, addicted to the “hip hop” drug, crack. These and other true stories are from the hard but triumphant lives of Black men who came of age with the emergence of hip hop.

This groundbreaking anthology, "Be a Father to Your Child," is a call to action by some of today’s most popular figures in hip hop culture. It also introduces first-time writers whose stories are equally compelling. Together, this collection of essays, interviews, and poems, counterattacks the widespread belief that Black men don’t care about their families. This is a composite portrait of a generation of “hip hop heads” who represent what is positive and enduring about this oft misunderstood way of life. The contributors’ challenges, victories, and their visions of how to build a solid family are sure to move any reader looking for inspiration on family and love.

BAF PRAISE FROM A COUSIN OF MO BEASLEY:

Here's to you and the 23 other Mighty Men of Valor...

I'm thanking you on behalf of my husband - this man has been carrying this book around with him like Suri Cruise and her blankie! :)

Everytime I ask, how is it? He responds "It's deep" - yep that's it...
As you know Moonie, he is not a man of many words anyway, but to get him to carry a book back and forth to work w/him - never mind sit and read it, is a milestone in itself.

So thanks to all the brothers for sharing their stories (discomfort, pain, courage and strength).
From the words of Dr. I.V. Hilliard, "We are to function according to purpose and our creative purpose is to be a Blessing outside of ourselves..."
