Beam combines elements of Hip Hop, live drum and bass,
Trip Hop, Ambient, and groove jazz to form deep urban textures and
soundscapes improvised on the spot each night.
Formed in 1999, Beam pushes the boundaries of rap and traditional
improvised jazz fusion to create soundscapes and textural grooves that
are like no other band you've ever heard.
David Throckmorton - Drums
One of the most in-demand session players in Pittsburgh. He has
toured the world and recorded with some of the most celebrated musicians including Jazz legend Maynard Ferguson, singer songrwiter Bill Deasy, Michael Glabicki (Rusted Root), vocalist Dianne Schuur, and Winger guitarist Reb Beach.
David's other projects are the Thoth Trio, with bassist Paul Thompson
and Opek Saxophonist Ben Opie, and a self-produced fusion group
called Electric Eel Service with Beam bassist Steve Landay and
guitarist Rick Mals. David currently endorses Yamaha Drums and Zildjian Cymbals.
David plans to release his first solo record in 2007.
Paul Thompson - Bass
Paul is a studied musician whose extensive jazz experience gained him the title of Music Director with Maynard Ferguson's band. He and David
are featured on the most recent Concord Records released album, Brass
Attitude by Maynard Ferguson & Big-Bop Nouveau. Paul also toured with
the late legendary Jazz tenor saxaphonist Stanley Turrentine. Paul is also currently an instructor at CAPA Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh.
Steve Landay - Space Bass
aka "Lando Calrissian" is an experienced and accomplished bassist and
considered an electronics freak, running his own studio as well as
producing and performing all 'MacGyver' type musical stunts with BEAM!
Steve is a mainstay in the critically acclaimed fusion group Electric Eel Service with David. He has also performed and recorded with such
nationally recognized artists as Dave Pahanish, Doug Edgel, Push, and
Sleeping Giants. You can also catch Steve playing around town with 7pc
