CANTON - Team USA advanced to Wednesday's semifinal game of the International Federation of American Football Junior World Championships with a 78-0 quarterfinal win over France in front of 10,145 fans Saturday here at Fawcett Stadium.
With a win Wednesday, the USA, coached by St. Ignatius coach and Westlake resident Chuck Kyle, would play in the Gold Medal game Sunday against the Canada-Japan winner.
The US, the No. 2 seed, exploded for 24 points in the first seven minutes and 46 seconds to take a 24-0, first-quarter lead over France, in the fourth game of the Junior World Championship of American Football quadruple-header. David Wilson of Danville, VA and headed for Virginia Tech scored two touchdowns. Nick Zachery of Sheridan, IN and headed for Indiana University set up his first score with a 50-yard punt return. Jordan Poyer of Astoria, OR and headed for Oregon State blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety. Brian Fields of Newcastle, DE and headed for Western Michigan scored the other TD.
They added 13-second quarter points for a 37-0 halftime lead. Wilson scored his third TD with 7:19 to play and then Arkansas State-bound Phil Butterfield of Lake Hamilton, AR, threw a nine-yard TD pass to LA's Noel Grigsby, who is headed for San Jose State. Judging by the pass pattern he ran,

(CINCINNATI) -- The NCAA has turned down Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk's
request for another season of eligibility.
He broke his passing arm and dislocated his shoulder in the 2006 season
opener while playing for Wake Forest. Mauk asked the NCAA for another year
of eligibility to make up for that lost season.
