Jen Williams, Deb Warner, Carla and Jim Thurston, PetsComeFirst.com, Petfinders.com, the Saint Bernard Discussion List, the Saint Bernard Rescue Foundation, and ALL veterinary doctors & technicians who treated me! It's thanks to all of you that I'm finally in my FOREVER home!! :-)
About me: I'm a handsome 14 year old (ok, ~2-1/2 years, in people years) 162 lb male rescue Saint Bernard. My fur has grown back in since I was rescued in August'07 ...and look at my bod now! Check out my video clip. How far I've come since my rescue day ...eh?!
I don't remember much of my life before Jen rescued me, but here's what PetsComeFirst had to say about me on my adoption page (my edits in parans):
"This is Bear. He is a 5 (my vet thinks I'm ~2!) year old intact (not any more!) male St. Bernard that was found tied to a calf hutch with baler twine imbedded in his neck. (Ouch!) He was extremely thin (~110 lbs), covered in maggots (1000+), near death. He was rushed to the vets by one of our volunteers (that's my Jen!) where they spent hours removing the maggots and administering fluids and large doses of antibiotics. The vets notified the local dog warden and the owner was cited for not having a license, no rabies, neglect, abandonment, and cruelty to animals. The owner said when she left on Thursday the dog was fine! By Saturday afternoon, he was as close to death as he could be. He couldn't even walk on his own ...the pictures (one week AFTER rescue!) pretty much tell the sad story of Bear being neglected for quite some time (see: amnesia CAN be a good thing.)
...Bear [was] neutered, heartworm and lyme disease checked. He is good with other dogs, cats, etc. He is learning to be a dog as he was tied to a calf hutch for quite a while. Foster is working on crate training him also. He should go at least 130 pounds (HA!) if not more. (MORE!) Very loving. (You bet!) Also, getting work on leash training."
Who I'd like to meet: Other Saint Bernards & Saint Lovers (i.e., their owners & friends). All the members of the "Bear - Fighting Back" fan club, who were pulling for me as I recovered, and most especially those who donated to my care and rehabilitation. Thank you!
