The Bearing Straight music project concept started in December, 2006. When Derek, who just completed his degree, decided to pursued music production. He always wanted to involve in music recording and production ever since college. However, busy school schedule and hectic college life kept him away from doing so. After he decided to pursue music production, he sang a few demo cover songs to some friends who were involved in the same worship team. Thought he got a few approvals from some of his friends, he faced a lot of resistance in general.
During his trip to Hong Kong, the “Bering Strait” and other names came across him on the plane. The word “Bering Strait” was on his mind during the whole time in Hong Kong. It was a difficult time for him during his stay in Hong Kong. Daily visits to his dying grandfather and among many other things made him to be even more determined to start the music project. Through depression and isolation from the communication to the United States, he began to write lyrics about his views and feelings. Towards the end of the stay in Hong Kong, he got an opportunity to perform in a jazz club near SOHO. He performed two songs and it was the first time he performed in front of total strangers.
Derek initially set up the band in the name of “Bering Strait” right after he return to California. However, one of the primary band members, Kristen, pointed out that the name was already used by another popular country music band. So she suggested using “Bearing Straight” and from there the band was officially formed. The name suggest to be focus in what the band wanted to pursue and furthermore, by picking out the specific letters from the name BeaRING stRaIGHT, the word “bring right” means bring righteousness.
