I dig checking out cool new artists in every medium; networking with activists, artists, DJ's, writers, playwrights, poets, thinkers, creative people, musicians, painters, filmakers, and of course just like-minded music lovers and them hip scenesters, too! I truly love listening to music I haven't heard before and of course, keeping up with all the cool bands and artists that I love.
I was born and raised in Boyle Heights. I think it's a cool place that allows for creative growth and experimentation! L.A. has produced some of the coolest bands ever (and yeah, some pretty lame ones too!). I've lived and travelled a lot of places, but have always gravitated back to this place, the City of Angels! I dig living in Boyle Heights because it literally is one of the last of the urban enclaves that is rich in character and cultural history. It is quite a resilient city that has a lot to see and enjoy. I am so into taking the Metro Goldline, which has finally arrived in the Eastside, it's about fucking time! I can now literally walk to work, take a train part of the way, but I am totally digging that I can now take it to Union Station! This is the kind of investment that L.A. needs, whether it be a subway or a lightrail. We have to stop driving and being dependent on oil and sending our troops off to die in the name of people who want to keep driving them lame-ass SUV's! All that money could be going into the music and art programs for kids in school! There has to be something more to live for!!!!
Lately I've been a lot more involved with my community! I'm really pissed at Barack Obama! I don't want him to send our troops to Afghanistan. If you're pissed too, I think you should tell him. I'm trying to stay politically active; trying to bring our troops home and not being an armchair activist; making an effort, to have a say in the way that my city is being planned; fighting eminent domain abuse, giving my input on how I would like my city to grow in a positive way, trying to stay informed of all the ways that corporate America lobbyists and our slimy local politicians are trying to take advantage of the non-suspecting voter; trying to prevent them from selling our city to the highest bidder! L.A. is a great place to live, unfortunately, there are many who want to build over all the great places that are beautiful in their own natural habitats (like the beaches, mountains, and stables/equestrian centers), as well as places known for their historical significance! I'm against all real estate development corporations building high density, multi-use(wanna-be New York City)high-rise projects that are not conducive to our California geographical infrastructure; with our earthquakes and extreme water shortage; do they NOT know you cannot build that kind of shit in a fucking desert! There are many proposed bullshit development projects that will have a serious environmental impact on Boyle Heights and all over East Los Angeles! Projects that will make our traffic even worse than it already is, like West Los Angeles! (no offense to W.L.A., but it REALLY sucks to drive there)! Keep informed Angelenos. There's a lot going on under the table, that is not transparent! Okay, so you heard my political-hobby, babble, spiel...Blah, Blah, Blah, I'm sick of this fucking shit!
Other things I'm into are theatre, art exhibits, gigs, taking the Metro to LA Central Library, Grand Central Market, Chinatown, thrift stores and Busters in South Pasadena; totally dig camping and road trips up and down the California Coast; Monterey, Big Sur, Half-Moon Bay,Cambria, Leo Carillo, Sycamore Canyon, Carpenteria, La Jolla; photographing people, historical landmarks and cultural events (& not so cultural events), I love taking my camera everywhere I go! I hate when I forget it!
I dig going to gigs, concerts, and dance clubs when time permits me to go, I'm typically busy working! I love dancing around my pad listening to music I love; dancing and skankin to reggae n ska, salsa, samba, cumbia, merenge, flamenco, and of course my favorite 60's Surf/Garage Rock-n-Roll! I LOVE old-school Punk Rock, like the Ramones, X, The Cramps, The Dead Kennedy's, The Bags, The Gun Club, Flipper, Blondie, and Iggy, The Dickies, Patty Smith,Television, Mink Deville, The Dead Boys, The Skulls, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Germs, Black Flag, The Controllers! If you know any of these bands, you know what I mean, you know where I'm coming from! I love the bands on my playlist! I mix it up every now and then. I don't always listen to punkrock,(but basically, that's where my roots lie) pretty much everything I love about the punk scene, can be stripped down to the coolest influences in Rock-N-Roll music ever; like the Brittish Invasion bands (The Yardbirds/The Animals), who were influenced by all the Blues artists from the South (Howlin Wolf/Little Walter/Jimmy Reed) and of course, "The All Girl 60's bands" (The Shirelles, The Shangrilas,Crystals,The Ronettes)who were all so totally influenced by Rock-n-Roll. It's all very cool...Rock-n-Roll that is! I fucking love it!
I dig life! I try my very best to enjoy it everyday! I am very grateful for my life and all the blessings God has provided me; great art, great music, a great place to live, a healthy life, great friends and family, but most importantly, my wonderful husband, Colin! Life is Beautiful!
Just a reminder that the Community Sketches: Tribute event happens from 7PM - 11PM... not 12PM - 1PM...
It's Thanksgiving weekend and a day after Black Friday, come join us in a celebration to being broke and imitations of the real things... because sometimes the imitations are better than the authentic pieces: Zune HD anyone? Art and music that pays tribute to famous and inspiration artists... We're working hard to make this a night that you wont forget (because it's all free and fun).
