"Music is essentially feel and emotions. Recording music is capturing such moment." Being around some of the most accomplished musicians, artists, producers, and engineers from a very young age, Ian has, with sincere conviction, developed a meticulous standard and an outstanding ear for musical performance and touch for artistic development.
From an early age, Ian had unique interests. Being the son of the legendary engineer, producer, and founder of Le Mobile, Guy Charbonneau, Ian had vast opportunities at a young age to begin acquiring the experience and expertise that has brought him to his versatile and broad skill set that he exhibits professionally today.
His fascination with the entertainment industry, developing, producing and recording music grew as well. With such passion soon led him to begin recording and producing music at a young age. One of his childhood playground, Leeds Rehearsal Studio, a well known musical landmark in the industry, Ian could not pass up the opportunity to engineer and help manage the studio operations. He found himself working closely with hundreds of indie and well-known musical artists and bands such as Ozzy Osbourne, EWF, Guns and Roses, STP, A Perfect Circle and Joe Cocker who utilized the facilities to write and do album / tour pre-production.
In the Spring of 2004, Ian was called upon to work on an inspiring project, which would prove to be an indescribable challenge. Sandra James was an artist diagnosed with abdominal cancer. With death at her door, Sandra could no longer deny her burning dream to record an album of original music. She called upon Ian to help fulfill this lifelong dream. With an unknown amount of time to produce the album, each day was a struggle. Ms. James expressed her creative vision on the album in great depth until her passing. Before leaving us, she voiced her desire to entrust Ian with fulfilling the creation of the album. The Sandra James Music Foundation was created for the purpose of perpetuating her works and inspiring future generations. Ian was assigned to the Board of Directors. His duties at this time entailed the production of the album, web design, album artwork, video documentary, and Foundation activities.
As he constantly seeks new adventures, in 2006, Ian teamed up with Canadian indie artist Jason Bajada to record and produce his second album. The album tracked between Los Angeles and Montreal received great critical acclaim. It also helped Bajada land a major record/publishing deal. In 2007, Ian was approached by Spaceland Recordings to create a partnership to record, mix, and produce an extensive series of live albums and audio for video with bands such as Datarock, Chromeo, Jonathan Rice, Malajube, Blonde Redheads and many others performing at The Echo, Echoplex, and Spaceland Clubs.
Occasionally, he mixes The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as a replacement to their head mixer. He continues to work very closely with Le Mobile on live music recordings for albums, television, film, DVD, and scoring projects. Over the last 10 years, Ian has assisted, engineered, and mixed many projects such as the Coachella Music Festival, Austin City Limits, Roger Waters, Kings of Leon, HIM, Rihanna, Jerry Lee Lewis and Morrissey just to name a few.
In the last year, Ian toured throughout The Americas and Europe recording, mixing and overseeing live broadcasts for The Offspring that were seen around the globe on such networks as the BBC and MTV for some of the world’s largest music festivals, Rock in Rio, Rock Am Ring, Download Festival, Virgin Mobile Festival and KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas to name a few. With an impressive list of projects under his belt and as an avid music lover, Ian has always strived for excellence in performance, quality, and feel. He has achieved an extensive amount of expertise, experience, and recognition for his professional achievements that earned him several gold and platinum albums as well as recognition from The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Whether it is a small scale or major production, recording, mixing, 5.1 surround sound or creative artistic development, Ian insists on the utmost quality and getting it right the first time. In today’s very challenging times for the music industry, he constantly seeks for new adventures and strives to help artists develop further. His life long dream, to develop and bring new talent to the world with the highest standard and quality always is first in mind.
