BEECAKE - Tartan Clef Music Award "Best Live Act" winner 2008
Based in Glasgow, Scottish band Beecake initially started out as an excuse for four good friends to have some fun making music. Beecake are Billy Boyd, John Crawford, Billy Johnston and Rick Martin and have all been long-term friends and played individually and together in various bands over the past several years. Beecake was formed in late September 2006 over a bottle of malt whisky in a Glasgow bar when the guys remembered how much fun they had making music together.
After selling out their first gig as Beecake at Barfly, Glasgow in late January 2007 and the surprise of having fans travel from as far a field as Japan, Germany, Italy, and the USA to see them play live, they decided to record some of their original music, in total five tracks which would later be released as their EP “Just B”.
Beecake have hit the number one spot on the myspace unsigned charts within the UK several times and continue to regularly hold a position within the top 10 unsigned bands in the UK, in various genres. They also continue to hold a respectable position within the myspace worldwide-unsigned charts.
After playing shows in Glasgow, London and Los Angeles, among others, Beecake gathered a very dedicated live audience. Beecake have to date played live with such artists as The Fratelli's, Sharleen Spiteri, Sandi Thom, The Attic Lights, Big Country, BMX Bandits, Amy MacDonald and Eddie Reader. Interest in the music press began to grow after several demo tracks were played on various radio shows including X-FM Scotland’s X Posure Show and on BBC Radio.
In mid 2007 Beecake again visited the recording studio to record some of their new songs and successfully began to produce, develop and create a sound that they knew was the way forward for the band.
Beecake have also recorded exclusive live acoustic sessions for X-FM Scotland and BBC Radio Pudsey and were penned in for several festivals over the summer including The Wickerman Festival 08. Beecake entered the studio yet again, in the Summer of 2008, to start work on their debut album.
More recently in October 2008 Beecake played at the Nordoff Robbins Awards where they won the Tartan Clef Music Award for "Best Live Act." The shortlist for the award had some of Scotland's best new talent including Glasvegas and Amy MacDonald.
Beecake have just finished recording their, as yet, untitled debut album to be released some time during 2009...Here is a small sample of whats to come...Press Play!
This Is Not An Exit
Evening.Seems that there isnt just a decline of Honeybees/Bumblebees and other types in Great Britain(and poss the world) at the mo but also of Beecake!
a quick hello from me as well! it's been absolutely insane here today! sometime in the night or wee hours of the morning there was a massacre in our backyard :( found 4 baby possums scattered around the backyard this morning...2 dead and 1 we had to end it's suffering and 1 we were able to capture and try to keep it safe. the one that was still moving but badly injured...I knew it was the right thing to do to end the misery but I just couldn't do it. Josh did it for me and I turned away so he didn't see me cry. :( I told him later (on the way to drop him off at his first church camp!) that I was so proud of him for being able to step up and do what needed to be done, even when I couldn't. We were able to turn the other baby over to animal control and that guy told me that there is a woman that works for them who loves animals and he gave me hope that if anyone can nurse him back to health, she can. I was relieved.
I do hope the rest of this day isn't as emotionally challenging! :(
more on the schedule so I gotta scoot along...but wanted to tell everyone hello and that I hope to be back later to listen to some tunes. still have "Broken Songs" stuck in my head but it's always better to listen to Beecake singing it than to hear myself only *grins*
Another short visit for me. Gonna' go help daughter w/ her daughter. lol, babies are a lot more work than most understand. LOL, KIDS are a lot more work than most understand.
I think I'll take a short nap before heading over there.
Hi, Mio!...So glad you're still enjoying your stay in Scotland!...The weather does seem to be really holding up for you!...I miss Beecake, Kirsty, Fee, Lainey, you and everyone else very much too!...Hope we can all get together again very soon, before we all pine away!!!....
I think we all need lifting up after all the bad news and sadness over the last 12 months, and Beecake are the ones to do it!....PLEASE GIVE US A GIG GUYS!!!!......See, I'm not above begging if I have to!.....lol........
work was crazy as lol...not only busy but I kept getting kids on scavenger hunts come in and want photos with me...weird lol.
driving homw was interesting considering the car was iced over and I had to put the windows down whenever I got to an intersection lol. Dropped down a gear to go over possible icy spots like on the dreaded Waihi Hill lol. Went straight for the fire when I got in the door.
Hope everyone is good...if anyone wants to send some heat this way lol. I'm betting it's snowing somewhere close
How do folks! Yeah I know I need to post more often, but I've just kinda got in a funk of nothing new to say. I'm certainly feeling my age as of late, kinda scary actually. Big fan of Michael's since I was 9, still can't believe he's gone. Miss the Beecake band updates, guy's what's going on with you all? Any way had a fun fourth, hope you all are having a good week. XXOOXX
Very sad for MJ's family, particularly his kids, but I wish the media would stop hovering like vultures. Also, 3.5 million on this memorial service when LA is broke already? Oy.
Well I didn't manage to get up for MJ's memorial at 5am...mum taped it but I don't know yet if I'll be able to watch it..those things are hard for me. I saw aome of the highlights on the news and was in tears when I saw Paris...especially as I just found out she's 11 ..that's how old I was when I lost my dad...it makes me so sad.
Got called up to work from 4 til 8...more money I guess lol.
hehe you guys are funny with your lyrics...I love how everyone gets something different hehe
I'm so glad I have my wonderful memories of being in the front row at the Silverdome seeing Michael Jackson at the Jacksons Victory Tour in 84. What a wonderful experience. RIP MJ.
