Old epsiodes of The Muppets. Tarot Readings. The esoteric, occulture . . . whatever the trendy word is these days. Days when the clouds completely obscure the sky. Natural oddities .
All time top 3: Pink Floyd, Faith No More, and Tool. I wanna be Les when I grow up.
You know, I used to have this ridiculous list of every band I've ever liked. This time I'm going to try to keep it to the artists that have shaped the way I think.
In the first grade, David Bowermeister showed my class a filmstrip of Saint Saens' Danse Macabre, and established my love of music - after that, it just kinda went everywhere. Janis Joplin taught me how to say "fuck you." Stevie Wonder and Prince teach me how to forget a bad day. Pink Floyd taught me how to dream. Alice in Chains taught me to stay away from the smack. In recent days, Metallica and Megadeth have taught me how to be a douchebag. You know, let's go ahead and add Queensryche to that part of the list. The Smashing Pumpkins taught me that even assholes can make amazing music, and Primus taught me to find my own way of doing things. I remember the first time I heard Nine Inch Nails - I was in my friend Jenny's Rabbit . . . that was a definite turning point. I was also with Jenny the first time I heard The Violent Femmes - that was the first time I let loose and danced and sang. Tori Amos taught me how to feel beautiful, and Bjork taught me that if you pour everything in your possession into what you believe, then who gives a fuck what anybody else thinks? I listen to Ministry and KMFDM when I'm angry or hurt, and if I'm alone, I dance until I feel better. Marilyn Manson taught me to be wary of gimmicks, because sometimes they can overshadow intelligence and talent. When I listen to Jill Sobule, I realize that sometimes the most honest and beautiful things are also the simplest. Morphine taught me that despair can be extremely erotic, and Mark Sandman taught me that you only need two strings to be a goddamn maestro. Tool teaches me . . .well, Tool teaches me that I'll never be done learning. Juno Reactor and Aphex Twin taught me that music can be really fucking scary, especially after ingesting large amounts of hallucinogens. And along that same line, Mr Bungle taught me how to say "Huh?" Then say "fuck it" and just enjoy the ride. By the way - I don't recommend going to that Aphex Twin site unless you are prepared. Richard James is a sick bastard. System of a Down taught me that anger can be really, really fun. Listening to Dream Theater and Rush has made me want to be a better technical player, but at the same time it's taught me that when I am able to play at such a proficient level, it doesn't mean I have to do so. Especially with Rush - Rush teaches cohesion. Oh! Holy lord, how could I forget Portishead? Oh hosanna, it's true - they are doing another album . . .
OK, this isn't going to work because I'm just going to keep adding bands. The Deftones.
Movies
True Romance, Goodfellas, Metropolis, Audition, 2001, The Color Purple. Gangsters, monsters, lovers and heroes, I love them all. I dig Kevin Smith, Terry Gilliam, The Coen Brothers (Big Lebowski!!!), Darren Aaronovski, David Fincher, Jean Pierre Jeunet, Robert Altman, Alex Proyas, Tony Scott, John Woo (especially Bullet in the Head), Tim Burton, Tarantino, Takashi Miike, Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi and Martin Scorcese; guilty pleasures are The Lost Boys, Jim Carrey and all the Brat Pack movies (but I STILL haven't seen St Elmo's Fire). Anything by Wim Wenders - especially Wings of Desire and Until the End of the World. Anything with Gary Oldman. Oh! I can't forget The Exorcist and Harold and Maude.
And I think I'm finally able to admit it in public: "Audition" is wonderful.
Television
Scrubs, My Name is Earl, The Office, Smallville. And The Jack Bauer Hour of Power. And Adult Swim.
Books
Geek Love is the greatest book ever written. Ever. Katherine Dunn. I love Tom Robbins, Kurt Vonnegut, Margaret Atwood - The Handmaid's Tale is one of my favorites. I like anything of a dystopian or post apocalyptic nature. Preacher is my favorite comic, and I also love all of Evan Dorkin's stuff, and Spawn was cool before that whole lame ass "new costume" gimmick.
Heroes
Heroes are an exercise in setting yourself up for a fall. That having been said, I really respect these people, and it would mean a lot if they respected me in turn: John Myung (well, OK. He might be a hero. I've seen him play - he can't let me down), Danny Carey, Tori Amos, Bill Hicks, Martin Scorcese, Rest in excess - Mr. Thompson, my Ryan, and Anne Spillman - the coolest woman that has ever walked the earth.

I'm not a big fan of talking about myself. I play the bassoon. Seriously. I am in a very happy relationship, and my dog rules.
Why isn't Jedi a choice in the religion drop down box? I think we all need to bring this to Tom's attention.
"I met hundreds and thousands of people, and none finer than the midgets and the Siamese twins and the caterpillar man and the bearded woman and the human seal with the little flippers for hands. I never asked them any embarrassing questions and they never asked me, and God, it was a great adventure." - Johnny Eck
Who I'd like to meet: I dunno. Cool people. Smart people. Funny people. If you're all three - bonus. Oh, regardless: open minded people. Facists and know-it-alls need not apply.
