"Oliver's passion for beer and food is evident from the first paragraph. The prose is at once zealous, lighthearted, and entertaining, and his enthusiasm is infectious. Once opening the book, one can't help but consider what beer to accompany the next meal or snack, to the point of planning menus for the whole week. A delightful must-read for anyone looking to improve their culinary life; also an invaluable resource to any restauranteur, chef, sommelier, caterer, gourmet food or beer retailer." -Reader Review

Brew Like a Monk - Stan Hieronymus
“All aspects of abbey-style brewing are explored in depth... from water, ingredients, and mash temperatures to pitching rates, influences on yeast behavior, and bottle conditioning. The text is a joy to read! At once both thoughtful and passionate, the book conveys the reader on a journey of exploration and teaching. It is amazing that such a wealth of useful information can be packed into under 300 pages and still remain so interesting and approachable. In my fifteen years of homebrewing, I can think of no other publication that is as captivating and enlightening.” – Reader Review
Heat: An Amateur's Adventures as Kitchen Slave, Line Cook, Pasta-Maker, and Apprentice to a Dante-Quoting Butcher in Tuscany - Bill Buford
“This book reveals a dead-on understanding--rare among non-chef writers--of the pleasures of "making" food; the real human cost, the real requirements and the real adrenelin-rush-inducing pleasures of cranking out hundreds of high quality meals. One is left with a truly unique appreciation of not only what is truly good about food--but as importantly, who cooks--and why. I can't think of another book which takes such an unsparing, uncompromising and ultimately thrilling look at the quest for culinary excellence.” –Anthony Bourdain
Homebrewing for Dummies - Marty Nachel
This was one of my first homebrew books and I would recommend it for anyone who is new to homebrewing and would like a basic idea of how the process works. The two things that set Homebrewing for Dummies apart is that it covers many topics without going into great depth and it has an excellent index. This book is a great quick reference for beginning brewers, though when it isn't loaned out I still look things up in it.
White Heat – Marco Pierre White
Chef Jared Simons has this book on his restaurant’s myspace page so I thought I would check it out as he’s one of those tatted up, eyelined chefs I admire so much. First of all, is this an art book or is it a cookbook? White Heat is both. You have to be serious about cooking to like this and prepared to spend time with your food. If you are, then you are up for treat. Some of the recipes are complex, but they are all doable for a meticulous home cook.
Wine for Women – Leslie Sbrocco
"Basing her choice to speak specifically to women on industry research that confirms that women buy more wine than men (including high-end bottles), Sbrocco compares different grape varieties and styles to wardrobe essentials-Chardonnay is basic black while Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp white shirt, and peppery, intense Syrah is that "must-have" red accessory. A gimmick? No doubt about it, but the analogy works very well." – Publishers Weekly
The Professional Chef – The Culinary Institute of America
Keep in mind that this is a textbook, not a cookbook. And this is THE textbook for the CIA, so its no “Cookin’ with Rosie.” I have used this book to increase my skill level tremendously. I am not a chef, but I am a pretty good cook. I found the background information indispensable when creating my recipes and fixing others. This book is awesome, but you’d better be SERIOUS about some food.
Ultimate Beer - Michael Jackson
Written by the late Michael Jackson, the greatest beer writer of all time, "Ultimate Beer is chock full of almost life size color photographs of beers from around the world, and text that is equally cosmopolitan... His descriptions are so vivid...he seems to enjoy cooking as much as he does drinking. Instead of joining him at the pub, maybe you'd rather follow him home around supper time." -New York Times
Nobu West – Nobu Matsuhisa
The first time I went to Nobu Malibu, they were serving a Nobu Pale Ale gelato for dessert. So I bought this book on the spot at the restaurant. Now we all know that Nobu’s reputation as a great cook, but the way he combines western and eastern and south American is just amazing. Even though some recipes are extensive and time consuming, I would consider the best cookbook I’ve bought in years. Simple to follow, extremely well documented and the pictures are just marvelous.
All Belgian Beers - Hilde Deweer
Fellow Beer Chick Hilde Deweer has painstakingly put together this 1568 page volume with great care and precision, highlighting each beer on 2 pages with a picture, flavor description, beer style, fermentation style, brewery, ingredients, alcohol volume percentage, color, appearance, serving tips, serving temperature, and other pertinent information.
YEAH BEER CHICKS ROCK!
Eat, Pray, Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert needed was a little distance. Make that a lot of distance. So she took a deep breath, dropped everything, and got out of town. She discovers the pleasures of Rome; the joy of learning 10 Italian idioms a day; the amazing eyes of her language buddy, Giovanni; and the healing power of pizza. She studies in an Ashram in India and finds love. Why didn't I think of this first?
Kitchen Confidential - Anthony Bourdain
Here's a quote from this book..."That elegant three-star concoction is the collaborative effort of a team of wacked-out moral degenerates, dope fiends, refugees, a thuggish assortment of drunks, sneak thieves, sluts, and psychopaths, in all likelihood pierced or tattooed and incapable of uttering a sentence without an expletive or a foreign phrase." Such is the muscular view of the culinary trenches from one who's been groveling in them, with obvious sadomasochistic pleasure, for more than 20 years. Enough said.
Books I'll be adding shortly (after I read them):
The Art of Simple Food - Alice Waters
The Best of American Food & Beer - Lucy Saunders
Cooking with Beer - Lucy Saunders
Decoding Ferran Adria - Anthony Bourdain

About me:
www.beer4chicks.com - www.christinaperozzi.com
"Able to name brews from obscure corners of the planet while discussing yeast cell division with the fermentation science guys from UC Davis, Perozzi is a pioneer in a field mostly dominated by men," said David Gadd, Managing Editor - The Tasting Panel of The Beer Chick.
She is quickly gaining a large following as the top female beer expert in Southern California. She was born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., home to the largest beer manufacturer in the world, mega-brewery Anheuser Busch. This irony is not lost on her.
Graduating with degrees in Journalism and Speech Communication from Indiana University, Christina realized her affinity for the beer world while managing the famous Father's Office in Santa Monica, Ca.
In August 2006, her love of beer drove her to start her own company as a beer educator, consultant, writer and beer sommelier. She has written for Gayot.com's Novus Vinum and Draft Magazine, and has been interviewed as an expert for the Los Angeles Times, Patterson's Tasting Panel, Imbibe Magazine, Market Watch and Eating Well.
She was recently featured in Angeleno Magazine, Metromix and KCRW's Good Food; where she and host Evan Kleiman hashed out womens' fear of beer, and was featured in the Los Angeles Times in an article about new professions in the food and beverage industry. She was also featured as "LA's Beer Chick" in the December 2006/January 2007 issue of Celebrator Magazine.
Christina leads beer tastings, teaches seminars and classes, and hosts public events and is available for private events - large and small.
She also teams with innovative chefs from around Los Angeles to hold Beer Pairing Dinners, most recently with Proprietor Josh Loeb and Chef Samir Mohajer or Rustic Canyon Wine Bar and Seasonal Kitchen and Chef/Owner Jared Simons at Violet Restaurant.
Christina also consults as a beer expert for restaurants hotels and breweries. She has worked with Craftsman Brewery, Deschutes Brewery, Violet Restaurant, Library Bar, Rustic Canyon, The Otheroom, Tengu Restaurant, Learn About Wine, The Geffen Playhouse, Bottlerock Wine Bar, Wine Warehouse and the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Century City.
She has her own beer blog at christinaperozzi.com, and is contributing to a book about beer for women with fellow beer expert and beer chick Hallie Beaune. Her mission is to dispel many misconceptions that women have about beer, and bring beer to the modern women's dining experience.
