As you can see, there are really no band members in Before Day. Before Day is a collection of studio musicians and vocalists - people from all walks of life offering up their talents often at odd times and scheduled around their everyday responsibilities.
There are so many that came alongside and helped make Enjoy the Show a reality. I want to thank the following people and I openly proclaim their immense talent. A special thanks to Ken Mary for producing Enjoy the Show and always having a listening ear and the patience to help make these songs come to life. The players are...
Right here is where most artists make an acceptable list of cool, hip bands that everyone likes or no one has heard of but they sound exotic, thus making us cool by association.
So, in keeping with the industry standard, we sound exactly like a modern day version of The Beatles and Enjoy the Show will likely hit number one in Rolling Stone's Top 100 all-time albums.
Millions of fans (still waiting to be discovered) fawn and faint over our music and because of this simple truth, you should download Enjoy the Show at least 100 times, quit your job and devote all your time to promoting it to friends and people in the mall.
On a more serious note, everything influences my writing. On some level, any music I listen to, any movie I watch, any book I read or sunset I view or moon I stare at influences what ends up coming out of me. If you think that is stupid or you want a list of bands, sorry.
Sounds Like
before day sounds like: norway, snow sleigh, sunray, seabay. There are literally thousands of combinations.
Again, here is the place where I am supposed to say that Before Day sounds like every other great band so that you can go, "wow, I should listen." The best way to describe our music is that it is pop/rock with a touch of folk and twist of country.
Hope that helps - the best way to find out, obviously, is to listen and then you can tell me!
Before Day is the creation of Greg Forney. Who is he? Well, I'm just a guy who loves to write songs. I also love my job as Creative Director at a great organization (Food for the Hungry). And I love my family even more than all of that. So it doesn't take too much detective work to determine the origin of Before Day - that is my "free time." The time after work, after bedtime, after mowing the lawn, coaching t-ball, well, you get the picture.
The whole songwriting experience is sort of a mystical one for me. It's not like I set out at any time in my life to purposefully write songs. In fact, I had no music background growing up, unless you call playing the recorder a breakthrough. Some time around high school, poems, songs and melodies just started "pouring out of me."
I can't explain it any other way. I could be getting ready for bed or walking down the grocery store aisle and a melody rises up. Or I might hear an interesting phrase and a song "materializes." This has been happening for years and the question has always been "What do I do with all this stuff?"
I've tried to be faithful, not bury them in the ground. Somehow, I believe they are gifts and I am somewhat responsible for them. To share them. So I've written songs for births, weddings, funerals, special events and for fundraising projects.
You might ask, why not tour or at least play local gigs. There is one problem, and that has always been somewhat of a dilemma. I'm not a very good singer. I'm not a very good musician. I play the guitar and piano, but my proficiency of these instruments has always been more for the purpose of composing. And then we can't forget that my "Before Day" time is pretty limited.
So I could go the natural route for songwriters and pitch songs to publishers, artists and labels. I've done some of that. I've had three songs published through the years. And if you're wondering about the songs on Enjoy the Show, there has been a good deal of interest from labels.
I decided, instead of just creating songs for others to sing and produce, that I would take a stab at pulling talented musicians and singers and create my own project. It's a long shot for sure. There is probably a 99.9% chance that I'll sell about 12 copies. But I think it's a risk worth taking.
The result of this risk is Enjoy the Show. It is quite diverse in its song styles and even instrumentation. You'll find instruments like a mandolin, blow whistle, banjo, and even a kazoo in one of the songs. Some of the songs have a pop feel. Some have more of a folk feel. Some have a country feel. The common denominator, I hope, is that they are good songs.
And that's the journey I'm on. I hope you join me on it and that you enjoy these songs.
