About me:
Hello! This profile is for my co-author, Melanie Hall and me, Ross Szabo. We wrote a book titled Behind Happy Faces that is coming out in August. The book is basically a summary of the most common concerns and questions I have heard after speaking to over half a million high school and college students about mental health issues over the past 5 years.
I started speaking about my life with bipolar disorder when I was 17 years old. I was hospitalized for wanting to take my own life and 2 months after I got out of the hospital a psychologist came into my classroom to talk about patients he was treating. As he talked about the patients every student started laughing. I got really angry and asked my teacher to let me speak. He said I could and two weeks later I started speaking about these issues. I really had no clue that I would continue to do that and then become Director of Youth Outreach for the National Mental Health Awareness Campaign which got me to this point.
I decided to write this book, because I have met so many people just like me who feel they don’t have a voice or any hope when dealing with these issues. I wanted to let people know that these issues can be treated. I know it’s not easy, fun or quick to do, but it’s possible.
I took a couple of stabs at writing this book on my own and couldn’t do it, so I brought in the help of the fabulous Melanie Hall. She did a PSA Campaign called Face the Issue and has a great writing ability. Together I think we put on paper what most people really want to know about mental health issues and we are looking forward to getting the book out there!
