Behind The Mic is a critically acclaimed grass roots promotions initiative. We bring together THE best of new music, spoken word and comedy in intimate, fun and friendly spaces. We also run a spin-off radio show on London's finest arts station, Resonance FM.
“An always eclectic, surprising and entertaining evening of music, comedy and spoken word that serves to remind us how much great talent there is out there waiting to be discovered.” Neil McCormick, Daily Telegraph
'A splendid arts series' Time Out (on BTM Radio)

HOW DO I GET TO PERFORM?
Programming is rather strict - only those we perceive as capable of attracting a major record or publishing deal will be selected. If you believe that's you then send us a lovely message or email to jr_at_jenroberts.co.uk. Unfortunately due to the amount of mail we receive we can't get back to everyone. (But we'll try!)
I'M NOT A PERFORMER, BUT I LOVE DISCOVERING THE BEST NEW TALENT BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE. AM I WELCOME TO THE EVENTS?
My friend, you're very welcome. Anyone with a passion for the arts is welcome. As much as we're about helping promote brilliant artists, we love to create a great value night of entertainment for audience members. We strive for a warm, friendly atmosphere for both performers and audience members; essentially, we want everyone to feel at home. For special events (launches/exclusives) we normally sell tickets on the web via eventbrite.com but for our usual monthly nights you can buy tickets on the door or join our advanced guest list for a discount. Email jr_at_jenroberts.co.uk Come down, we'd love to meet you!

A BIT OF HISTORY
Behind The Mic (BTM) was set up by Jen Roberts (artist manager, promoter and occasional musician from Merseyside) in spring 2006. The idea was to bring something a little different to the showcase scene by incorporating the best of new musical talent with a splash of award winning comedy and a sprinkling of performance poetry. Only the best acts would do and the atmosphere had to be friendly, warm and ambient.
Since it’s origins at The Glass Bar in Euston, BTM quickly spread it’s wings towards Belsize Park (The Washington & The Adelaide) before swooping down across the river to The Ballroom, SW8 and back up to the legendary Soho Ruvue Bar in central London. In two years Behind The Mic has picked up some great reviews and recommendations from the likes of Neil McCormick (music critic for the Daily Telegraph), Time Out, Urban Junkies and importantly, audience members.
However, due to time constrictions and the desire to never compromise the quality of the talent, Behind The Mic has now been limited to the third Thursday of the month at The Library (from 2009) and the last Thursday of the month at Soho Revue Bar. Monday nights from January 12th 2009 also see the return of our radio show on Resonance FM.
Jen’s criteria for programming remains strict where only acts with potential to attract major label or publishing deals are selected. She frequently liases with A&R representatives; recommending to them the hottest acts she’s seen and receiving suggestions for future nights.
Some of the acts Behind The Mic has featured:
Beth Rowley, Erin McKeown, Micachu, Gideon Conn, Ella Edmondson, Sound of Rum, Sara Schiralli, Scroobius Pip, Will & The People, Roxy Rawson, Dockers MC, Kirstenana, Wallis Bird, The Ragamuffin Children, Orphans & Vandals, Rory McVicar, Katherine Ryan, Laura Imbruglia, Shazia Mirza, Sinead Quinn, Mozzy Green, Jake Morley, Pippa Evans, Adams & Rea, Catherine AD, Phildel, Stuart James, Jo Neary and many many more…

ETHOS
In a world where consumer choice is expanding to the point of creating indifference, as people are overwhelmed by the ever expanding quagmire of specialist radio and TV stations beamed directly in to their homes, losing their patience as they flick through 500 channels of digital information, we aim to counter the potentially anaesthetising effects of such a dilemma. We hand-pick the most exciting and eclectic range of artists from London and beyond to showcase their varied modes of creative expression in an intimate, relaxing and atmospheric setting. Varied artists who when brought together and contrasted with one another reflect the many different facets that exist within every one of us, and in doing so celebrate our diversity as individuals and as a community, whether local and social or global and cultural. The most inspiring harmonies afterall are often the most extraordinary.
