Online Rock Says– "This is a CD that constantly evolves and shifts, a Shroedinger's soundtrack to a Fellini film as re-imagined by Baz Luhrmann , and the best way to experience it is to hit play, kick back and swallow it all in a single gulp."
Some Say– ". . . Like Waiting for the Sun meets A Love Supreme meets Raw Power "
Out of the spirit of music, art, and intoxication Behold began their musical explorations under the name Ecce in late 2004 (ecce is the Latin imperative of behold). Founded by philosophy grad and music aficionado James Jeffery Caldwell, (aka Jefe), the initial concept came from a collaboration of songs with drummer and older influential cousin Adam Zuckert (F-minus, Red 5, Matt Costa) written over previous years during wandering thoughts in college classes. The collaboration generated interest from booking promoters and agents and soon landed gigs, sans an actual band.
An ad placed on Craig's List found guitarist Chris Peterson, a studio musician recently moved from Boston where he had graduated from Berklee College of Music. Peterson's virtuoso handling of guitar through uniquely American music styles meshed brilliantly with the more punk and alternative rhythm guitar influences of Caldwell. Friend and fellow alternative-metal enthusiast Jeff Neel was called in to handle the bass work for the band, adding his melodic Eric-Avery-infused bass ethic into the group. A last minute ad on the prosperous Craig's List found session drummer Thom Hartwick, (Rose's Pawn Shop) for a gig that was to be played later that evening. Filling in with but one rehearsal where only he and Jefe ran through the songs, cemented his place in the group and solidified the line-up that recorded the bands self-titled album.
Self-produced, and engineered by Paul McKee (Sad Girl) their debut album is attributed to the band's constant cross-pollination of music has created a wide ranging fan base that led one fan to remark: "They sound like a penthouse party where The Stooges meet The Eagles then meet The Doors and overindulge with Jane's Addiction." Guest musicians on the album include Adam Zuckert (Red 5, Matt Costa), Pancho Burgos (Naked Eyes, Brian May), and harpist Philip Young, who played in the Air Force Strings and was the Harpist for the Kennedy White House.
The artwork concept on the album is nods to famous sculptures and paintings having to do with revolution, (Michelangelo’s David, Che Guevara and Vladimir Lenin) painted in the style of Erte and Tamara Lempicka, both of European 1910's-1940's fame. In the booklet there are images that reference ancient Roman and Greek art and Deities, voyeuristic pin-up women, renaissance masterpieces of sculpture, and current masterpieces from modern sculptor Robert Graham. The concept was to portray revolution and intoxication with the worship of women, which are themes embraced on the album.
