The Bellwethers founder Fran Scianna has a musical history that stretches from dive bar basements on the Bowery in New York City to the bright lights of the Marquee Theater in Tempe, Arizona. Born in Trumbull, Connecticut his passion for music was raised on teenage discovery of alternative rock. He listened to early punk pioneers like the Ramones, the Clash and the Sex Pistols, became fascinated with the sonic landscapes painted by Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine and inspired by the power of melding art and music by acts like Pink Floyd, Jane’s Addiction and Nirvana. All these influences find a natural balance within The Bellwethers.
Formed in the fall of 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona, The Bellwethers include veteran musicians Michael Fearless, Joe Bauman and Matt Cherrill.
Michael Fearless has lived in the valley for most of his life and has gone from being a fan of the independent music scene to participating in it. He has played rhythm guitar or bass in several indie bands where he has destroyed many guitars in his zealous performances. In the Bellwethers you will likely find him stage right shouting his battle cry "No Guitar Mercy!”
Joe Bauman, born and raised in Arizona, has played lead guitar with many local acts, done a variety of session work and contributed to numerous projects throughout his musical career. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Bellwethers and continues to be one of the best lead guitarists in the Valley of the sun.
Matt Cherrill was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but raised in Scottsdale, Arizona and has been playing drums since the age of thirteen. Matt started playing live when he was fifteen and has played all over the Phoenix and Tucson music scene for numerous years. He has played in several bands through out the years starting in 1992. Matt saw some notable success In 2002 when his band Supathrive was invited to play the Vans Warp Tour. Matt has also done studio and session work with various local artists. Matt brings a unique and powerful style to the Bellwethers, accenting and complimenting the songs with driving, body-shaking beats.
The Bellwethers are earning a name as an edgy, high energy rock band with a strong visual and artistic signature. They continue to master their craft and establish themselves as one of Phoenix’s must see acts.
