BIO
With three successful mixtapes under his belt and after almost a decade as a hip hop producer and songwriter, Ottawa rapper Belly’s double-disc debut THE REVOLUTION premiered at number one on the rap charts in Canada in June of 2007. In the same month, Belly took home a MuchMusic Video Award (MMVA) for Best Rap Video for “Pressure” featuring Ginuwine, delivered a powerful performance at the MMVAs. The Toronto Sun reported, “the standout live performance" of the night and was also interviewed by CNN’s Al Jazeera during a visit to New York City. A few short months later, in October 2007, Belly became the first independent Canadian hip hop artist to go Gold this century!
Belly recruited many of hip-hop and R'n'B's finest to work alongside him on THE REVOLUTION, including Fabulous, the legendary Scarface, Kurupt, Nina Sky, Ginuwine (on first single, “Pressure”, which went to 1 on MuchMusic), Mario Winans, Massari and Monique. Production was deftly handled by Beat Merchant. Da Heala, Goggs, Whosane? and Bacardy also contributed their talents to this soon-to-be-a-classic album.
Belly now calling himself ‘Rebllyus” kicked off 2008 with a Middle East release of “The Revolution” and soon after, 2 CMW Indie Awards nominations were also announced for Favourite Video of the Year and Favourite Urban Artist/Group or Duo of the Year. Then came the big one: the Gold-selling rapper took home the 2008 Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year and was also the only rapper nominated in the prestigious New Artist category. This year Belly - Rebllyus also took home the award for Best Rap Video of the Year for his single “Ridin” ft. Mario Winans - directed by RT! at the MuchMusic Video Awards.
“7 Days & 7 Nights”, is slated for a North American release in October 2009, with the first single “Hot Girl” hitting radio waves in June 2009 to capitalize on the hot club track for the summer and to help set up the fall release. There is no slowing down for this multi-award winning artist and lyricist. Along with the name change, from Belly to "Rebllyus", he wrote and co-produced Canadian hot Pop/R’n’B Superstar Danny Fernandes’ debut album “Intro” which got released in October 2008. Two singles off the album “Private Dancer” and “Fantasy” have both peaked in the Top 10 on the charts and has since reached Gold status. This achievement has solidified Rebllyus as a genuine ‘Hit Maker’ and has since moved on to produce & write tracks with some of Canada’s best, which includes such artists as Ivana Santilli & Carl Henry.
In the weeks and months leading up to the release of THE REVOLUTION, the Canadian rapper of Palestinian decent showed and proved to all that crossed his path that whether he’s called “Belly” or “Rebllyus”, his sound is signature and is synonymous with controversy and hype. In early 2007, he wowed audiences across Canada with his live show when he toured with and earned the respect of legendary rappers Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube. A few months later, his video for “History of Violence” was banned by MVN in the U.S. due to its anti-war messages and graphic images. It has since received over 50,000 spins on YouTube. During NHL Playoff season, he teamed up with Ottawa Senators goalie and friend Ray Emery and set the city ablaze with “Sens Fever’” when he released the Senators anthem “Go Sens Go”. He performed the anthem in his hometown for over 15,000 people, including the Mayor, and it was used in a musical montage on Hockey Night In Canada. And In May Belly became the first Canadian rapper to be interviewed by Geraldo at Large for Fox News.
Belly Mania - a term coined by Hulk Hogan himself, while Belly was in the studio recording with his daughter, Brooke Hogan - is hitting Canada harder than ever. The rest of the world is up next.
“7 Days 7 Nights” shows the growth in this prolific hit songwriter /producer, and promises to make Rebllyus a household name. With releases scheduled in territories all over the world, the anticipation of this new disc is high and coming soon. Watch out, the revolution continues …
