A few words about the tunes:
• Chresten Hyde is a Chicago based musician and friend. For his new record, I played bass, blew the cornet solo, and suggested a single, other-wise unremarkable, C sharp; everything else was done single-handedly by this player/producer/writer in about a month.
• The Queen City Zapatistas were a parade band of "educated" players trying to make each other laugh. We've been called a jug band's "Younger, Bigger, Drunker Brother," "Absurd," "Gross," "Obscene," and "Zapatastic."
• Jon Drake & The Shakes are a carnival. Trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, 'cello, double bass, organ, glockenspiel, guitars, drums, harmonica, vocals, cheers, fights, gambling, gallons of wine, most of a 36" disco ball, a bi-monthly bearding contest, and someday: records.
• Liz Bowater is a brave, new, folk singer/songwriter with whom I used to play in Cincinnati. This cut is "Like a Homesick Child" from an unfinished recording project in 2006.
• Southpaw and the Sinisters are a couple of good American folks who thought a little good American folk music might be mighty nice. We wanted to do a waltz, and this is the only one we all knew.
• The Princes of Hollywood
are two musicians from Athens, Ohio and a fluid compliment of sidemen. On "Pretty Out" from their most recent album, I play brass bass, tenor banjo, and cornet. As for me: Well, I'm Benny Harnish, a blue collar musician, among other things. "Benny Harnish plays the tuba with amazing fluidity and funkiness. He is truly phenomenal" -John Wetzel for the Morgan County Herald, 6 August 2008 (A rural Ohio newspaper serving approx. 5,000 homes)
"Besides his mastery of the manipulative difficulties, [Benny] knew well the shades of tone and expression of which the alternative resources of the four strings afford such rich variety" -Bernard Shaw for the Pall Mall Gazette, 5 July 1886
"Benny Harnish 282" Sacred Harp Minutes from the 2009 Midwest Convention
well. tonight I found myself with four amigo's sitting down by the beach, gathered humbly and quietly drinking wine. we had so much fun we watched the sun rise. inspiration comes quickly. especially when the wine comes for 2 bucks a Trader Joes.
