Ben is clearly a gifted musician, wowing audiences with his jazz fusion and funk gigs on the violin and saxophone. From the tender age of 6 Ben embarked upon his musical journey taking up the violin. After playing 6 years studying classical violin ben was eager to experiment with other forms of music. He took up the saxophone at the age of 11 and became more influenced by jazz and fusion music (jean luc ponty/charlie parker). By 15 ben was spotted by a local fusion bassist franc o'shea, who took him under his wing and introduced him to the jazz scene. He began playing with pro musicians around brighton and the south coast such as Tristan Banks, Franc O'shea, Dave Trigwell, Tom Phelan. By 16 ben played his first london gig at the 606 jazz club with franc o'shea's quintet featuring young jazz musician of the year- Tom Cawley(piano), young jazz musician of the year- Gareth Lochrane(flute) and Tristan Banks on drums. Since then Ben has been involved with many different projects and sessions around brighton including flamenco(Candela)-Womad 2005, gospel/jazz(Viola Wills)-ronnie scotts 2004, world fusion-playing with indian tabla player Sirish Kumar, Psy-Trance(Supersting). Ben recently went to Granada, Spain to record on Franc O'shea's new release 'Alkimia' featuring world class flamenco musicians; Rubem Dantes(cajon), Jorge Pardo(flute), Canizares(guitar). Ben is now working with his own jazz quartet(The Ben Sarfas Quartet), fusing many styles, such as drum and bass, funk, jazz and soul. He has recently completed the motion picture sound track for forthcoming local film 'Brighton Wok'. You can catch Ben playing sax in local funk band 'Oomphf' every wednesday at the Casablanca Jazz Club, Brighton. Look out for his kick ass quartet playing around the south, featuring guest vocalist and younger brother Sammy Sarfas, with Tristan Banks(drums), Mark Edwards(Keys) and Andre Fry on bass... biog by Sammy Sarfas.
