Writing and playing music can mean different things to different people. Those moments when you click with fellow musicians and audiences and make something monumental, even for a few minutes, are very special. Other completely different, but equally satisfying, moments come in a quiet room or on a train when a few scribbled words and some pieces of melody suddenly become something unique and wonderful.
It is a large responsibility to tell the stories of others and do it well. Perhaps that is why I have developed a style which uses their own words. I am always looking for a new letter or journal entry that tells an interesting story from history - one that connects with people today. My album 'The Sydney Cove Project' is all about that idea. Recently I am delving into family history and the writings of Australian colonial woman.
I am happy to call myself a folk musician because I like the attitude that comes with folk music - one of communication and meaning over gloss, substance over appearance. As a songwriter, my heros are people like Ewan Maccoll, Tom Paxton, Dylan of course and Australias own Paul Kelly. As a singer it is people like Andy Irvine, Luke Kelly and Christy Moore.
All of these loves can be seen in "Lime and Steel" - a new band I have formed with whistle/banjo player/songwriter Paddy Connor. Go to myspace.com/limeandsteel for details of gigs, photos, recs etc. I will also post some on this page.
Oh and I have also joined "The Spooky Mens Chorale" (hence all the spooky gigs on my calendar) - will be touring down the south coast with them mid November. You can find out more about them at www.spookymen.com
Cheers,
Ben
