Ben Trexel Biography
Ben Trexel is currently working on APPLESPACEBAR's second album while also producing albums on CATCHFIRE, DAYZD, BROKEN RAIL, and JUSTIFY THESE SCARS, all extremely talented Alabama based bands.
From playing concerts for neighbors on front porches to playing high school gymnasiums as a teenager, to playing thousands of shows, making albums, and engineering and mixing some of the biggest names in popular music, Ben Trexel’s career has followed an extremely varied, rich, and ultimately upward trajectory.
“My parents let me go to concerts at a very young age, starting around 11 and by age 14, I had already seen about 50 concerts by acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Robin Trower, Aerosmith, Yes, Kansas, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. This early rock education had an immediate and lasting effect on my whole being. This was my path. No matter what.”
Almost as early as Trexel’s interest in performing began, he became enamored with recording. 1983 started with a Fostex 4-Track which progressed to an Akai 12 Track in 1988 to ADATs in 1994 and finally to Pro-Tools in 2000 which he espouses to this day. As a recording and mixing engineer, Trexel has worked with such diverse acts as Matchbox 20, Fuel, Three Days Grace, Duncan Sheik, Brandi Carlile, Conor Oberst, Zac Brown, Chris Thile, Vanessa Carlton, and Train. He also continues to produce and co-write with aspiring artists in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama as well as Atlanta.
As a solo artist, Trexel has released four solo albums: Balance of Power (1991),
Wearing a Groove (1997), Under the Radar (2000), and Deep In The Mix (2004). Balance of Power, a 17 song progressive rock opus which bear out influences from early heroes Queensryche, Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Rush, was re-released in 2008 by Las Vegas based label Retrospect Records. Trexel’s other three releases are all-instrumental albums which focus on his prodigious guitar talents. Trexel is also a founding member of the band APPLESPACEBAR who released their debut album, WELCOME TO THE DREAM in January of 2009. Trexel has also had the good fortune to place several songs in film and television including the New Line Cinema Films “The Hidden II- The Spawning,” “Fever Lake,” and “The Day My Parents Ran Away.” His songs have also been featured in several segments and promos on ESPN, Fox Sports South, Access Hollywood, The E! Channel, and ABC Network, including Dancing with the Stars.
At present, Trexel is focusing his talents on co-writing, producing, and helping to develop emerging artists. Not to be confined to the rock genre, Trexel has also branched out to urban pop, hip-hop, and modern R&B. In addition to Catchfire and Dayzd, Trexel is working with R&B act BTM and rapper TJ.
What the future holds for Trexel no one knows, but for sure it will be a busy, varied, and interesting road.
