Berimbrown are the most eclectic band from Brazil, who made the leap to Europe. After their overwhelming debut in Germany 2005 they topped it with great success in the festival season ´06 – they could account more than 40 triumphant gigs in clubs and on all types of festivals. Beneath this world music-, samba-, or “Hippiefestivals”, as the “Burg Herzberg Festival” of which a.o. the WDR Rockpalst (German-Television ) broadcasted a live recording. On the occasion of the soccer world championship they performed on several stages and despite of the premature elimination of their Seleçao, they didn’t loose their optimism and rocked the stage. Of course the Berimbeau mustn’t lack there, the traditional instrument of the Capoeira. Luscious funk, with tight brass licks culminates in hard rock; Capoeira singings for several voices flow into Samba; African rhythms with amazing percussion solos follow a soulful ballad, that singer Tom Nascimento solely accompanies with his virtuosic play on the guitar. Thereby Berimbrown are always in proper style, they just refer to their roots. At the same time action never misses out: sole the dancing of DJ A Coisa, who with his scratches in a perfect James Brown outfit makes the audience rave and Mestres Negativos Capoeira dances on the stage are memorable. Although the band already has enough fun on the stage by itself, from the very first moment they involve the audience and teach the unsuspecting auditor dancing steps and Portuguese lyrics.. Nonetheless it’s mainly the topics of their lyrics that are important to the band. Needless to say, that you have a lot to tell, if you’re from the slums of Belo Horizonte. Berimbrown take a stand concerning the situation in Maria Goretti, their quarter, that suffers from violence, drug abuse and the lack of jobs and prospects. They denounce the brutal everyday life in the Brazilian Favelas, which is dominated by poverty, but they also highlight the chances of a peaceful coexistence without economical destitution and daily struggle for the mere survival; they demand respect and particularly the equality of all colours. All band members have experienced racism in Brazil that still exists since the liberation of the slaves and now concern with it in their songs. Back in Brazil Berimbrown get involved with organising capoeira- and drum workshops for the kids from the slums in order to impart them artistic and social prospects. Berimbrown: a blithe family that turns every stage into a blast of spiritedness.
