Begun in November 2004 as a side project to explore music that might not be accepted by a mainstream bar crowd, Berkley Horse came to life when the primary projects of three of the members ground to a halt. The four members decided to take the project out of the practice room and add a few classics and mainstream songs.
Donovan, lead singer, is a history and trivia freak and procured the name of the band (it is a 19th century sexual torture machine) and designed the logo. Drummer Paul Davies, who may be leaving on a permanent basis but is up in the air right now, provided practice space for the band for the first year and a half. Joe Skrutsky, lead and rhythm guitarist, was a former member of Liquid Lunch with Paul and such bands as Metal Militia. When songwriting, he provides the melodies and rhythms to which Donovan writes lyrics.
Jason Marcheska and Steve Aceca are former bass players, followed by John Cognetti (aka Bulletboy) who is the newest permanent member of the band.
Berkley Horse plays a combination of readily recognizable, danceable and popular rock and heavy rock combined with older-style heavy metal.
? and John lay down a strong rhythm section, while Joe's screaming-fast guitar and Donovan's searing vocals are punctuated by intricate fills from the
drum set. The band is also working on original material.
