BIO:
Bernie Bauer has always had a true passion for the bass. Having studied and explored music of many genres since childhood, Bernie is fluent playing in any style or musical situation. In addition to playing 4 and 6 string bass guitar, he also has experience as an upright bassist, vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist. As a founding member of the internationally acclaimed jazz-funk band Big Organ Trio, Bauer has been recognized as a versatile and in demand bassist, as he continues to carve out his own unique voice on his instrument.
In addition to being the bass player of choice for many studio recordings, Bauer has played hundreds of shows across the globe with a variety of groups, including legendary Boston/L.A. rock band El Camino, Alt-Country rockers Stewboss, and with Nigerian singer-songwriter Nayo, in addition to Big Organ Trio. Other credits include work with Keith Emerson (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes), and producer Brandon Christy (The Matrix, Access Hollywood, Robbie Williams). Bernie's compositions have also been featured on MTV, E! Channel, and CD compilations worldwide.
Being a professional musician has afforded opportunities to travel and play in some great venues and locations, including a Japanese tour, gigs at Fillmore Jazz Fest (SF), 10,000 Lakes Festival (MN), and The Great American Music Hall (SF). As a sideman the bassist has also performed at major label showcases in NYC, Los Angeles, and Austin (SXSW).
Thus far, Bernie has absorbed the work of such bass greats as Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), and James Jamerson (Motown). Other influences include James Brown, Miles Davis, and Jimi Hendrix, and various instrumentalists, such as horn players, keyboardist, and drummers, wherever there's a good groove, rhythm, or melody. Bauer has a very strong interest in older styles of rock, funk, and jazz, from The Rolling Stones through Pink Floyd to Frank Zappa, and has morphed these influences into a strong and dynamic style of playing that not only includes a deep underlying pocket and tone, but also the ability to create amazing bass lead solos. Bernie never overplays, and truly understands the importance of subtle touch, technique, listening, and playing off his band-mates, bringing an indispensable wealth of bottom end refinement, taste, and inventiveness to any rhythm section.
Bauer possesses a Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications (Audio/Video Production) from Ohio University, and has put this expertise to use throughout his career as an engineer and producer. Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2002, Bernie has been performing and doing freelance studio work, as well as teaching 20+ private bass and guitar students.
