Bernie Keleher's Blurbs |
About me:
I have lived for different periods of time in all the states of Australia, working in various occupations. I have always enjoyed exploring National Parks; taking in the flora and fauna as well as the wonderful scenery.
I class myself as an Australian rather than giving allegiance to any one particular state.
I have now reached my 50's. My wife and I have three children, all now in their twenties and enjoying branching out on their own in adult life. This leaves the long-awaited oppurtunity for us to pack up and head off around this great country.
One reason we packed up and left suburbia is our dissatisfaction with the way Australian culture is developing. We seem to be losing our language, attitudes, customs and lifestyle. I choose to be out in rural Australia doing what i can to keep our heritage alive.
This is perhaps why I became involved in bush poetry. I have been performing at festivals and bush balladeers musters since 2006, around Southern QLD and Northern NSW. I now look forward to participating in festivals throughout central NSW and Victoria, feeling honoured to be partcipating at the Young's Cherry Festival and other top class events.
i became involved in bush poetry whilst living in Brisbane and going on camping trips with friends. Whilst sitting around the campfire with a glass of port, I would conjure up bits and pieces of Henry Lawson, Banjo Patterson and bits of humorous pieces rattling around in my head. I recall reciting the great Australian poets to my children around the open fire, as they were growing up in Tasmania.
I enjoyed entertaining in this way and the reception was quite good. I started scouring second-hand bookshops to uncover poems from the era of the late 1800's and early 1900's; more obscure poems rather than following the path of learning and presenting standard classics that have been done by so many for so long.
My first attempt to get up on stage was at Tenterfield's "Oracles of the Bush" in April 2006. This got me into the finals. I received tremendous encouragement from the established performing bush poets. As I learnt more tradtional poems, I started writing my own. Competing in various competitions such as the QLD Bush Poetry Championship at Beaudesert, the Bundy Muster, Brisbane Ekka Bush Poetry Comp, North Pine Bush Poets’ Camp Oven Festival and various bush balladeers concerts gave me placings and awards and more importantly confidence and experience.
i was helped by the generous support of the Beaudesert Bush Bards. I have really caught the bug now. I used to paint(watercolours and oils)as a hobby, but in recent years haven't had the time nor inclination to do it. Now I find that I am using poetry as a creative outlet: basically painting pictures with words.
I have now released my first cd of bush poems, titled ' Having a Laugh and a Joke before I Croak.'
Apart from some tradtional pieces, there is humour and pathos. of the 16 tracks, half are my own poems.
I look forward to having a yarn and a beer(or a glass of red) with you along the traps somewhere in this great country. You might find me busking at caravan parks, keep an eye out and enjoy!
