Beryl Turner's Interests
|
| General | As the intro states, I'm into DJing- Disco, Post Disco, and House particularly, and hobby gaming.
I've been spinning since 1980 (freshman year, HS) and I haven't stopped ever since. I've been gaming nearly as long. I still play or run in a RPG almost every week.
Writing, on the other hand, is something that has come to me rather recently (1996). I primarily write Science Fiction and horror. I plan on having a site up with my fiction pretty soon. Until then, there are a few places where you can see some of my writing as of now.
Here, you will find some fiction based upon the game SLA Industries. Much love to Sue Wilson for hosting the stuff!
Dementia and Dynamism is my blog where you can read some of my more "critical commentary on current events and the world.
Finally, there is GamingReport.com where you can read my reviews on gaming products.
I also play video games. I got into them as a kid and now I continue to play as a form of physical therapy for my hands. I finally got my hands on a XBoX360 and my wife calls herself an "XBoX widow." Currently (12/29), I'm playing "Fable II." The game is pretty interesting and I'm hoping that it does the same as the first, but just with more depth and longer game play. I'm also running around playing Fallout 3 and getting into all kinds of trouble.
The piano/music theory lessons are coming along pretty well. As for the remixes, I have a few done already. I'm considering releasing them on white-label, just to get them into circulation. By the way, I have another MySpace page up, with my single, "White/Black Unity." It's www.myspace.com/djberylturner, so go there and hear one of my tracks and let me know what you think. And it's my track, so feel free to use it on your page, if you wish.
Also, my mixes are back up on the page...dig the new spiffy player!
All this and I'm still having fun being married! My wife Brandi is a joy to be with and it's only getting better through the years! Marriage is like anything else; what you get out of it is based upon what you put into it. My advice to all of you couples out there...communicate. Talk to each other. Ask each other about your days, and be willing to listen to what the other has to say! And don't bottle up your feelings. If something is bothering you, say it, but be polite and caring about it. But, say it. If nobody knows there is a problem, you can't fix it. I've been at this with her for 13 years, this August 6th...we've beat the national odds four times over, already.
Well, I'm done preaching. Enjoy the rest of the page! | | Music | Update: The best way to keep up with me now is by hitting me up on Facebook or Twitter...I'm still here too, but just bouncing back and forth, so keep your net eyes and ears open!
BTW, if you wanna reach me, you can catch me here on myspace, facebook (Beryl Turner), Live Journal (dj_beryl_turner AIM/IChat (WHPKFM), or even on Twitter (kragshot) or at dagrooveman@gmail.com.

Saw "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and my review (w/spoilers) is here .
| | Books | So, what has Beryl been reading in the last few weeks?
Well, let's see; it's been kind of slow, but the list goes as follows:
"Orcs"- Stan Nichols- This one deserves the hype! Read it!
Codex Alera 1-4:
"Furies of Calderon, Academ's Fury, Cursor's Fury, and Captain's Fury)- Jim Butcher
I am so loving this series of books. Once again, Butcher does not fail to please with this series of novels. Read it!
Enough prattling from me! Go and get some reading done and perhaps shoot me a line and let me know what you are reading! | | Heroes | As a former soldier, I have nothing but admiration and respect for the troops overseas. The Turner men all have a history of service. My father was in the Marine Corps, I was in the Army and my nephew Grayson is currently serving in Korea with the Army.
Regardless of the meaningless drivel of politicians, the soldier is forced to pay the price of ill-thought plans and schemes. All I would like is for those who serve now to come home safely.

About me:
Guess what?
No player again...easy come, easy go...sigh.
Like the headline says, I'm a DJ among other things...some of those being a husband, a writer, and a game designer.
Let's detail some of that:
I've been a mix DJ for nearly 25 years (on and off). I specialize in Disco/Post Disco, House, Progressive, and other forms of popular dance music. Right now, I have a radio show, Underground Groove on WHPK 88.5 FM, Chicago where I play single tracks and highlight mixes from local DJs, as well as my own mixes. (You can catch the show on the internet right here.)
I am also venturing into the realm of music production. I hope to be able to break into the electronic music scene very soon. Right now, I have a track up on my other MySpace page right here, so click over and give it a listen. It's titled "Black/White Unity" and so far, everyone has said that it's bangin'!
Head over and see for yourself!
Continuing about me, I've been married for more than 12 years to a beautiful and strong woman and I'm looking forward to another 50+ with her. No kids yet, but not for lack of trying :)
I've had the writing bug since 1996 and while I have been published, I'm still looking for that big score.... I am also working on a project to get other people published as well.
Finally, I also do game design and I've got a few projects on the fire right now. In the past, I have worked with FASA, Storm Press, and currently, I'm at the helm of my own production house, Cry Havoc Studios, Ltd.
As you can see, I have quite a bit going on in my life, but that's enough for now...ask me more if you want to know more, check my live journal page, What's Going on in the Mind of DJ Beryl Turner...or:

Who I'd like to meet:
That's an odd one. I would imagine that the basis of this question is centered around celebrities. However, people are people and while I respect celebrities for their work, they are still just people. Furthermore, I have found that if you treat them as just plain folk, they appreciate that far more than maniacal adoration and the usual fan drivel.
Nevertheless, I might as well go along with the question. However, beside each name, I will list what my interest in the person is based upon. As for non-celebrities, if I want to meet a person, I just meet them...end of story.
Most of these people will be actors or performers simply because I know where to meet authors and DJs. In fact, I've met quite a few of the people in that group who I am interested in already.
Jill Scott- I love her voice and lyrics. I'd like to meet her to find out the location of that special place inside of her, where she turns her feelings and thoughts into such beautiful imagery. Besides, I would love to be able to lay down a house track to her lyrics.
Vin Diesel- He plays D&D between shoots on his movie sets. What kind of characters would the man who portrayed Riddick and Taylor Reese in Knockaround Guys, play in a game? Or is he already playing those characters on screen?
Dave Chapelle- I just want to find out what happened in his own words...face to face. Nobody walks away from 52 million dollars, unless something was really a problem. And after that, thank him. His comedy helped me out when I was in a bad way. Sometimes, laughter is the best medicine.
Rachel Ray- I just wanna hang out with her, trade recipies, and have a good meal. My wife teases me saying that I have a crush on her, but while she is damn cute, I don't work that way. Besides, it doesn't matter where you get hungry, just as long as you eat at home....
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - I think that he's a cool guy. Besides, I'd simply would like to shock the hell out of my wife, by showing up one day with him in tow. "Hey baby, I'm home and I've got company...." Yeah, she has a huge crush on him.
Michael Jackson- Just to be able to say that I met him and to say that I believed that he was innocent. Besides, we're both from Gary, IN.
Cytherea- You figure it out....
George Clinton- This is sort of a mulligan. I actually met him once when he did a show in Gary, around 1983. Now that I'm getting into the music business, I would like to do so again, but this time, be able to sit at the man's feet and learn what he would be willing to teach about the process of creating music.
Roy Ayres-- Another musical genius. A man who has reams of knowledge to share on the art of making music.
Samuel L. Jackson- Why the hell not?
Then there is the clone-revival technique list; those celebrities who left way, way, too soon- no matter how old they were when they died.
In no particular order:
Count Dante, Bill Hicks, Minnie Ripperton, Phyllis Hyman, Johnny Cash, Robin Harris, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Luther Vandross, Screamin Jay Hawkins (just to find out if all of those kids are really his...), Eddie Guerrero, Gorilla Monsoon, Andre The Giant, Charles Schultz, Sun Tzu, Walt Disney, Albert Einstein, Leonardo DaVinci, Robert Heinlein, E.E. "Doc" Smith, and Cordwainer Smith (Dr. Paul Anthony Linebarger).
There are more, but that should be enough for now....
