Bêabá do Samba is a Chicago-based band specializing in the sounds of Brazil. Playing a diverse repertoire of traditional samba, pagode and bossa nova, the group is composed of some of Chicago finest samba and jazz musicians.
On the tracks above, Celeuma, Um Calo de Estimacao, Homenagem ao Malandro and Agua de Chuva no Mar feature Edinho Gerber. Sabia and So Tinha de Ser Com Voce feature Stephen Ramsdell.
Bêabá do Samba is:
John Beard Cavaquinho, vocals
A native of Manchester, England and alum of the Guildhall Conservatory in London, John has been a fixture on the Chicago jazz scene since the late 1990's. A visit to a Mangueira Samba School bateria rehearsal in 2004 forever shifted John's musical focus to samba and he has since studied cavaquinho and percussion with respected sambistas in Rio de Janeiro.
Clarice Cast Percussion, vocals
A native of São Paolo, Brazil, Clarice studied percussion at one of Brazil's most elite musical conservatories before relocating to Chicago to study percussion at Northern Illinois University. Clarice also teaches Brazilian percussion and Afro-Brazilian rhythms to aspiring percussionists of all ages and plays with several area Brazilian music bands.
Felipe Fraga Percussion, vocals
Felipe, originally from Curitiba in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, has been playing percussion since age 9. At age 13, he began studies at the Fine Arts and Music School of Paraná (EMBAP), where he performed with local orchestras, big bands and marching bands, the MPB Orchestra of Curitiba and with artists such as Arthur Moreira Lima, Altamiro Carrilho, Joel Nascimento, José Canuto and Roberto Gnatalli. Since relocating to Chicago in 2001, he has performed or recorded with Howard Levy, Roberto Assad, Yolanda Adams, Nick Colionne and Joe Vasconcelos and opened for Vinicius Cantuária and Daniela Mercury.
Silvia Manrique Lead vocals
A Chicago native, Silvia grew up in a household that spun Walter Wanderley and Sergio Mendes records at parties, solidifying her interest in Brazilian music from a very early age. While performing in a salsa band at university, a Brazilian guitarist friend suggested her voice was better suited to the sounds of MPB and she has focused on this ever since. Silvia has been performing Brazilian music in the Chicago-area since 2006 and has made guest appearances with Planeta Azul and Soul do Brasil. Silvia has also studied Brazilian percussion in Rio de Janeiro and is a member of Unidos do Quilombo percussion ensemble.
