Hello and welcome to the BETAMAXNOMATES MySpace Abomination, a place for friends, family, and fans of BETAMAXNOMATES. Only joking, this page is for one thing and one thing only: WHORING. Whoring this music to any housebound emo kid or South East Asian spambot that'll listen. BETAMAXNOMATES has no shame, too much free time, and too little talent. Handy cut ‘n’ paste bio follows ‘after the jump’.
Bridging the gap between synthpop and shoegaze, industrial and IDM, techno and trip-hop, BETAMAXNOMATES boldly goes where countless other better, more successful, artists have gone before. Armed only with a library of preset synth patches, recycled drum loops, and a passing familiarity with the I, IV, V chord progression, BETAMAXNOMATES’ music has been deemed ‘listenable’, ‘[not] without merit’, and ‘tedious and derivative’.
Notoriously antisocial, BETAMAXNOMATES shuns any sort of ‘collaboration’, fiercely suspicious of anyone who might seek to corrupt/improve his singular artistic vision. That said, should the ‘right contract’ (read: any contract) come along, BETAMAXNOMATES is fully prepared to get a lopsided haircut, don a too-tight battered leather jacket and drainpipe jeans and generally compromise said vision all over the place. (BETAMAXNOMATES uses Ableton and Native Instruments software, Novation keyboards, and Apple computers).
Unschooled in the dark art of ‘mastering’, BETAMAXNOMATES’ work might be charitably described as ‘lo-fi’, ‘sloppy’, ‘amateurish’ - perhaps even ‘charmingly’ so. Though his music costs little to produce - and sounds it - the low level of financial investment/actual effort required allows BETAMAXNOMATES scope to explore a variety of genres and adopt a number of artistic guises, drawing influences from across the musical spectrum, to create tracks that invariably just end up sounding like something Martin Gore binned in 1986.
And when he‘s not busy ‘charting new sonic landscapes’, ‘synthesising the sounds of a post-millennial urban dystopia’ or ‘ripping off artists on Warp’, BETAMAXNOMATES also dabbles in the digital DJ scene, cannily spying an already overcrowded marketplace and shouting ‘me too!’
Wherever there’s a bandwagon shy of max occupancy, BETAMAXNOMATES will be there to provide the soundtrack. Eat football, drink BETAMAXNOMATES. Piss god-like genius.
Finally finished up my rave mix this evening. It's 18 odd minutes of fast-paced fun - air horns, breakbeats, chipmunk divas, piano stabs... you know the score ;-)
So here's my set from the Made In Glitch event I played with edIT from The Glitch Mob last year. The night was, to use the parlance of our times, off the heezy fo' sheezy.
Nothing to do with Underworld - I just thought I'd nick the title. What it is is a kind of mish mash of dubstep, drum 'n' bass, and I suppose some 'garage-y' type tunes at the beginning (but when the crowd says 'bo' thou shall not say 'selecta').
One mix to rule them all - or flogging a dead girl? South Central, Larry Tee, Bobmo, Chungking, Dead Disco, Jean Nipon and Metro Area all make an appearance - but to what end? Only you decide.
Just the usual melange of dance (Surkin, Hoxton Whores, SMD) electro-pop (Alex Gopher, Dragonette), disco-punk (!!!, Van She) and indie rock (Editors, BRMC) - plus some seriously stinky fromage smeared on towards the end (Livin' Joy, Stereo Total).
Loathe it or hate it, dubstep is very fashionable right now. Betamax weighs in with this mix featuring Kode9, Skream, Digital Mystikz, Benga, El-B and a whole host of people you've proabably never heard of.
On the boy's team: Metronomy, MSTRKRFT, Richard X, Teki Latex, Simian, Duran Duran et al. 'Representin' the 'sista's' it's CSS, Paula Abdul, Beyonce, Nelly Furtado, Janet Jackson and co. Let's get ready to rumble! etc.
'Electro'ish-themed mix (hence the title). Starts off on a fairly heavy four-to-the-floor kinda vibe (Digitalism, The Knife, MSTRKRFT, Para One etc.) before taking a detour halfway through into the land of booming 808 bass and booty-fixated rap where Spank Rock are kings.
15min mix 'n' mash of dance, pop, electro, and some indie-schmindie alternative rock including Cut Copy, Trentemoeller, Elastica, White Rose Movement and Hot Chip.
