Bette Noir doesn't mind you calling them pop, but let's get something straight: When you say "pop," you better not be talking about that teen-queen crap. They play pop songs, but for grown-ups. It's OK to like sunny melodies and fuzzy guitars, but the real world is sometimes heard through a hangover and seen through smeared mascara. Now that we've got that cleared up, you can start enjoying Bette Noir's blend of pop, country and indie rock. You like mash-ups? Imagine a world in which The Replacements, Lucinda Williams, Wilco and Kitty Wells are the subjects of a bizarre, underground experiment. The result is sharp as a skinny tie, but ragged as cutoff jeans, too. Thats what we're talking about. Bette Noir sounds like sitting on the stoop on a summer night, listening to Cheap Trick cassettes, drinking lukewarm beer, wishing you hadn't let it all end so badly and waiting for the phone to ring.
really like the songs, esp. 'kid' and 'sunburn.' howabout a southern-fried breeders/throwing muses, with a touch of pretenders? anyway, your drummer sure knows how to bash those skins (especially for someone who tests and measures kids' psyches all day).
