“There are dozens of really top-drawer female Soul singers in what is a highly competitive field, but few can match the flawless totality of conveyed experience that Bettye LaVette never fails to achieve. She is the consummate artist who can relate on every level. Take Bettye LaVette away from Soul music’s history and there is a gap which no other person I can think of could have filled”. - Dave Godin, the late, esteemed English soul music writer and historian.
"You've got a singer here who is willing to stretch and not content to live in the safety zone. Bettye Lavette's voice is the superb line that connects Lucinda Williams' "Joy" to Dolly Parton's "Little Sparrow" via numbers by Sinead O'Connor and Joan Armatrading. Those songs never sounded better and neither has one of R&B greatest under-acknowledged vocalists"
- Elvis Costello
"Ache has never sounded so funky. Weary, wise, defiant and vulnerable, Bettye's a force of nature... She's outdone herself on this one."
- Bonnie Raitt
“Bettye LaVette’s voice has the kind of earthy urgency that can’t be faked or taught.” – Nashville Scene
“LaVette is the most emotive, emotional singer in the R&B world.”- Minneapolis Star Tribune
“Though she’s gritty and loves to testify, she never overdoes it.”
-The Village Voice
You are FABULOUS woman. And, yes, Chris cried like a BABY while you sang "Talking Old Soldiers". THAT is just going to happen when you do what you DO (so well). It's not a bad thing, it's a talent thang :)
Can't wait to see you this FRIDAY at the Palladium. We saw you at the Tampa Theatre (when you accidentally turned off your mike). THAT was a FABulous show and you are a FABulous act woman :) ALSO saw the Blue Divas interview. Must admit that Chris (my wife) says that she would DEFinitely be one of the people in the front row crying at some of your songs. LOL. WE are so looking forwards to the upcoming show :)
