Five is too hard. Bev has six: Hard Times in Babylon (Eliza Gilkyson), Charity of Night (Bruce Cockburn), Broken Things (Julie Miller), Ingenue (KD Lang), One Heart (JD Martin), 1000 Kisses (Patty Griffin)
Greg thought it was stupid to have to just pick five. He seldom plays by the rules. Greg's picks: Blue (Joni Mitchell), Late for the Sky (Jackson Browne), Eat a Peach (Allman Brothers), Who Knows Where the Time goes (Judy Collins), Confessing to the Moon (Will Ackerman), The Fantastiks (Original Cast Recording), Suite Bergamasque (Claude Debussey), Album 1700 (Peter Paul & Mary), Poison Love (Buddy Miller), What's New (Linda Rondstadt), Someone to Lay Down Beside Me (Karla Bonoff), Standing in My Shoes (Leo Kottke), Farther Along (The Byrds), Good Feelin' to know (Poco), Ingenue (KD Lang), Broken Things (Julie Miller), All Beatles
Bev Barnett & Greg Newlon have a musical, life and spirit connection that feeds a vocal blend likened to sibling harmony. This couple creates modern folk/Americana music that blends fiery guitar work with soulful harmonies, producing a sophisticated, contemporary acoustic sound that gets up and walks.
In live performance — as a duo or with their band — Bev and Greg speak from their hearts to the heart of the audience. The connection they have with each other seems contagious and soon the audience is sharing in tears and laughter seen through the eyes of a very real relationship.
"Fantastic live performance. Its amazing that so much warmth can come from just two guitars and two voices."
-- Eric Behlmer, Barn Concerts
With a gift for delivering the essence of a song, Barnett’s voice has been called angelic - but with the ability to turn down the sheets. Sometimes you hear the honeyed tones of Mary Chapin Carpenter, and sometimes you hear hints of Sade.
Newlon's guitar encircles the song as he finds his way between the notes with delicacy and strength. His fluid, full guitar and vocal arrangements are the result of a long and varied musical journey from his beginnings in the late 60s rock scene of Chicago combined with his background in musical theatre and barbershop, to the country rock sound of Aspen in the late 1970s and more recently through blues, country and modern folk. All of these influences have shaped his unique, contemporary acoustic style.
“In a world of fast food and empty calories, Bev and Greg are real food.
Their songs speak their truth - and do it well. Tuneful and talented.”
- Cosy Sheridan
Bev Barnett & Greg Newlon "effortlessly channel the intimate, casual atmospheres of cozy living rooms and warm hearths. Simple themes of goodwill, everyday miracles, love and self-acceptance weave their way through the duo's 2007 disc Any Doorway Will Do."
- Good Times Santa Cruz
