A 9 piece, all women primarily but not exclusively latin jazz band. Sometimes we are 9 people, sometimes 6 or 7, or 3 or 4. Some of us are teachers, others are good at math. Most of us are good at counting, which is why we can be in a band together! We have in the group, actors, computer whizzes, attorneys, mountain climbers, maintenance engineers, political consultants, and some who are full time professional musicians. We are a BIG band now, with 3 horns (flute/bari sax, trumpet, clarinet/soprano sax), two percussionists, bass, keyboard and guitar/ukulele. There are some excellent vocalists among the group, including Michelle Dedman, and Danielle Westbrook.
BEVY does a mix of musical styles, starting with latin (Cuban, mambo, salsa, tango, etc.), Brazilian, and ending with great jazz ballads.
We love playing for people who love to dance. Its great when kids get into the dance action first, and drag their parents.
We have some dreams and plans. Someday we will join procession of the species as a bevy of quail. Someday we may play all of the Eagles Halls in Washington State (they have good dance floors!)
Our members are (taking a deep breath…): Sue Smiley – conga and percussion, Lorree Gardener, Bass; Betsy Perkins, percussion and especially maracas; Becky Liebman, keyboard, and occasionally baritone horn; Nancy Curtis, flutes and bari sax; Lydia Beth Leimbach, keyboard; Lisa Seifert, clarinet and soprano sax, Danielle Westbrook, trumpet and vocal; and Michelle Dedman, guitar/ukulele and vocal. Between us, we have hundreds of years of musical experience but don’t sound “old.” Come and hear us!
