The last twelve months were HUGE for Australia’s first lady of dance. She has released the 11th installment of her successful Mixology dj compilation series, and thrown herself into the international arena, collaborating with Armada’s Sophie Sugar (UK). BeXta has played abroad, playing in the Philipines, China and more, plus her Kiss radio show, several features on Afterhouz FM and a feature on Carl Cox’s radio show. And of course, continuing her extensive national tours with all this, has made her one of the busiest Aussie dj’s in the last 12 months.
At the beginning of 2008, we saw the release of the single “VIP” featuring the vocals of Amii - showing her musical depth with some vocal progressive trance. The track was well received - it was featured on the front page of iTunes and the video clip was “clip of the week” on Vodaphone. VIP also received healthy radio support across the country.
In December 08, she released a collaboration with Sydney rock outfit “Meza”. Called “In my mind” this track is another solid vocal trance offering from Australia’s number one female dance producer. This track had Bush style vocals with a Richard Durand feel, and was supported by some of the well known players in the international trance scene, including Sophie Sugar, and MEM.
BeXta also recently rereleased the Skirmish EP and Lunar Tango - 2 very successful past releases - BeXta’s first EP from 1999, and her first ever single from 1995. They haven’t been available on downloads til now, and the Skirmish EP especially was being requested almost on a daily basis.
BeXta’s Mixology Digital Record label has recently signed up 4 new artists, all releasing their debut singles with MDR. Mixology will also be releasing Bexta’s new alias “Phats Life” - a hard dance and hardstyle alias we can expect to see a lot more of. The upcoming single “SHFL” was used for the online video competition so you think you can Shuffle”. The track has now been used by many many video shufflers on youtube, and before even being released, is on it’s way to being an anthem for 2009.
BeXta has also founded a new venture called “Australian Shuffler”. They are currently running an online comp called “So you think you can shuffle” - celebrating the Melbourne Shuffle. Australian Shuffler has been holding events across the country, and will be involved in the first ever Shuffle Festival to be held at Federation Square - the SHFL Festival.
BeXta is one of the few dj’s in Australia releasing her own music. Her producing highlights include 2 4star reviews in DJ Mag. An “anthem of the year” for Radio One Judge Jules. Remixes of artists such as Vanessa Amarossi, ACDC and Icehouse, a top 10 ARIA independent album release, and a swag of singles that are instantly charting on sites like trackitdown.net.
This year BeXta’s music appeared in the massive campaign from Carlton Beer, called “Team Dry”. This is massive exposure for BeXta’s music in Australian households.
BeXta has been performing live since 1993 and djing since 1997, headlining shows across Oz and also in Canada, UK, Europe, Indonesia, Asia and New Zealand. She has been top local support for international artists such as Paul Van Dyke, Armin Van Buuren, Fat Boy Slim, Carl Cox, Basement Jaxx, Chemical Bros, Timo Mass, Brooklyn Bounce, Technoboy, Prodigy, Markus Schulz and many many others. Her musical style as a dj is predominantly trance but covers all sub genres, such as electro trance, progressive, tech trance, hard trance and hard dance/hardstyle.
Her first release, single “Lunar Tango” was released by a small indy label and received well in 1995. Then she signed to Sony and released her “skirmish live EP” which did extremely well. She has had a string of singles to date, including “One for the Road” originally released in 2001 and after receiving a 4 star review in DJ mag, went on to end up in Judge Jules anthem list for the year.
In 2004, BeXta released her debut album “Conversations with ones and zeroes” which went to no8 on the Australian independent album charts. Bexta has also remixes several high profile artists, including ACDC and Icehouse, and also “the Winner Is…” – the top 10 track that sampled the announcement of Sydney winning the 2000 Olympic games bid.
BeXta’s recent development of her own Mixology Digital label has seen great success with her own releases and other artists on the label – each release entering the trance charts on Trackitdown and Beatport, and supported by iTunes.
With the Mixology compilations continuing, the label going strong, and the releases lined up for the next 12 months, BeXta has, is, and always will be one of the major players in the Australian dance music scene. And by the looks of it, her demand now internationally, is only going to lead to bigger and better things for this young lady, and more BeXta for all of us!
