merciful, this mystery...'s Interests
|
| General | God, writing, skating, the beach (the place, not the movie; no offense, but I think Leonardo DiCaprio is such a twit), The Detroit Red Wings. The New York Yankees(even though this probably breaks the heart of my Tiger fan Dad). I have a xanga site, though mostly just to link some friends to this one. But it has some fun quizzes, a great song, and other things, if you want to check it out.
I started using AIM Express a few months ago. My screen name is infinityschild, but I will block you if you creep me out . ;)
| | Music |
fielding(great rock band with thoughtful and wonderful songs, pretty poster above; lyrics to "All You'll Get" in name and headline), Squad Five-O, , Skyway, Flatfoot 56, The Shins (because even the sad songs have a certain charming lyrical absurdity, like they write a song that makes perfect sense then take one word out of each line and have their friends play mad libs with it; also because they have some of the most original figurative language and when I'm listening to the song "Those To Come" while driving, it always seems to fit somehow with the movements of the cars around me),Death Cab for Cutie(love that name too), Blindside (my "friends", right? I'm totally at myspace for the music). ***MxPx, Matt Redman, Modest Mouse (and not just for the last two years.), Relient K because of "For the Moments I Feel Faint" and their talent for exploiting the cultural icons of my childhood.
***Early this year I got hooked on the music of Damien Rice. I avoided it for quite a while, because my brother told me I'd really like it, and he's not always right when he says that. But when I listened, I loved it. It sounds "pretty" and "simple" to me, for lack of better words; and I don't have a lot of music that strikes me that way.***I respect artists a lot more if they write their own songs, unless it consists of never-ending, sophomoric dick jokes (ie, most of Blink-182's catalog). I like artists that have something interesting to SAY, who know how to use words to express things and relate to other people.
***Also like a lot of music that's not really around anymore: The Rat Pack, Frankie Valli, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, Plankeye, Five Iron Frenzy (one of their songs is the inspiration for my slight dandelion fetish), The Ramones, The Clash, The Waiting... | | Movies | ***The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is amazing; you have to see this one. It's one of the few adaptations that really does justice to the book.
***Serenity (It's awesome; you must buy the DVD in stores now).
***The Usual Suspects (all the props to Charles Baudelaire too; it was a pretty good trick), Office Space, Royal Tennenbaums, A Simple Twist of Fate, Fight Club, Gosford Park, Donnie Darko, Trainspotting, Les Miserables, Life As a House, Outbreak, Sleepless In Seattle, Big Fish, Boondock Saints (love Irish accents, can't say why), 10 Things I Hate About You, Garden State, Rushmore, The Kiss of the Dragon, Mixed Nuts.
***Pretty much anything with Cary Grant; he was such a hottie way back when. An Affair To Remember, The Grass Is Greener, Amazing Adventure, and Penny Serenade are all great.
***Hotel Rwanda was a good film; I went with my cousin, and she brought a box of Kleenex; we used half of it too.
***I got the Lord of the Rings boxed set for Christmas; that's awesome (and even stranger, because my Grandma doesn't use the internet, so they tricked me into buying it on amazon, told me it was for my brother); I'm a Tolkien fan anyway (good books, man; oh right, wrong section). I like The Star Wars movies too, but to a lesser extent; my brother is was obsessed with those when I was a kid, so I got turned off by that a little.
***Whoa... I'm like totally thinking that I spend way too much time in front of a t.v. screen... but you know I can watch a movie and read -or even exercise- at the same time. I really can. I swear. | | Television | Firefly-the movie (Serenity) is great, and I would still watch the show if they brought it back. I'd probably buy them on DVD too.
I love While You Were Out, for reasons I can't explain (an endless stream of inside jokes with my cousin).
I've also been watching/taping Prison Break, Heroes, Jericho, Ugly Betty, and The Office. I get Monk and Veronica Mars on DVD from the library.
| | Books | *** C.S. Lewis. J.R.R. Tolkien. Though that makes me sound kind of fantasy-obsessed, which isn't true at all; C.S. Lewis also wrote a lot of great non-fiction (plus I'm writing an allegory right now, so it helps to admire writers who were familiar with the particular complexities that involves). ***Trainspotting is a good book; I really liked that it was written in phonetic, junkie-gutter-punk Scottish slang. ***I just read Freakonomics; it was really interesting; I read it in one day. ***To Kill a Mockingbird, Heart of Darkness, The Testament, A Return To Modesty... Cookbooks (especially Italian cuisine and ones by Jamie Oliver), coffee table books with huge pictures of Ireland...***I just love books is all; I collect them. | | Heroes | Jesus, C.S. Lewis, Brit Brat, my parents (who have been married for thirty years - to eachother nonetheless).

About me:
***Creative. Lefthanded. Bit of a pyromaniac. Hated school (it was kind of like spending six hours a day listening to various foreign languages; I would have to go home and read about what the teacher had just taught everyone else). Was a geek in high school and really cool in college for the same exact reason: I'm the type of person who will wear flannel pajamas to class if I feel like it***Go slightly insane whenever I get bored. I like to write (mostly fiction, some creative non-fiction). Have a blue infinity on my right shoulder (no, I'm not like really into math: it's a God thing). Have absolutely no sense of direction (not only do I not know north from south from east from west, I have to imagine holding a pencil to tell right from left). Have a candy fetish and am a connoisseur of ketchup. I'm weird, but trust me, weird people have more fun than everyone else who is too busy pretending they're not weird to enjoy themselves.***Frustrated by the constraints of the two-party system; I'd probably have to invent my own political party to affiliate myself w/ one. I will never "go into" politics 'cause I'd have to give up too many of my political beliefs. I appreciate the electoral college and firmly believe that the state of Michigan should have one of its own, because Wayne County (read: Detroit) is the only reason we have a democratic governor. ***I believe in God above all things. I also believe in the U.S. Constitution and personal responsibility.

Who I'd like to meet:
*On MySpace, I would like to meet... People I already know, so if you recognize me, "friend" me. I'd love to keep in touch. People who are willing to discuss those things you're not supposed to bring up in "polite conversation": God and politics. If this is you, please friend me; I'm sick of polite conversation and would trade every moment of it for a bit of intelligent coversation, People with similar beliefs and interests.
***But I would REALLY like to meet... C.S. Lewis (is it all right to want to meet someone who died like two decades before you were born?), Tweety Bird, Myself at the age of four. I would like to tell that little person not to want to grow up too fast but just enjoy being four, because there will come a time when you will wish you could have stayed that age forever, The guy I'm going to marry, Emilie Amanda (yeah, Brit, I see you laughing over there in the corner), Jesus in the flesh (though there's time enough for that, I guess), J.D. Kavanagh (the most interesting person I ever invented; a shrug is worth a thousand words)
