Big Amp Envy is an Alternative Country band started in 1996 by bassist, Steve McKenzie and accordion player, Tom Stearns, played steadily together until 2002 in Boston, Cambridge, Providence, and Attleboro. Moves by Atwood to Los Angeles and McKenzie to Chicago split the band up. Their only recording was a 4-song EP under the guidance of producer Carl Schneider. After a three-year hiatus, BAE reunited at the Rick Crawford Tribute (Crawford was the Slycee Jenkins' frontman who passed away in June of 2005) at Johnny Mac's in Attleboro, MA for a four-song set with members Tom Stearns (Accordion), Mike Levis (drums), and Steve McKenzie (bass). Sessions began on Penance, a new 9-song album, in June of 2006 with Atwood, Stearns, McKenzie, Schneider, LeBeau, Peter Crawford, and Rick Stattler. Savastano began singing with the band in April of 2007, adding a great new voice to the mix. The album is a celebration of the old and new BAE: songs that are 12-years old as well some penned by Atwood in the last six months. The band's sound in Stearns's words has "Matured nicely." Big Amp Envy will perform June 30, 2007 at a benefit in Newport, RI and hopes to continue its successful performances at venues like T.T. the Bears in Cambridge. A single called "Replacement" and a B-side cover of Sparklehorse's "Piano Fire" will be released on June 30th. Penance will be released in the summer or fall of 2007.
