Big City's Interests
|
| General | CURRENT STORY: AUTUMN by Eric Schwartz
THE LOWDOWN:
A wave of violent werewolf attacks put Big City in the grip of fear. When a suspect that Stack and Needless are after is one of the first to be butchered the hunt for the creature is on... but the creature may be closer than anyone suspects...
SNIPPET:
"... Eckers stood up. “B’ya? Is that you?” He whispered loudly. “Man, that ain’t funny. Is that you?” No reply came. Eckers dropped his cigarette and smashed it under foot. There was another sound of falling garbage. Eckers took a few steps toward the noise. “I swear, B’ya, if you’re trying to freak me out, I’m going to kick your ass.” It was then Eckers saw two dim lights in the dark. They were low to the ground and bobbed gently. Then they appeared to blink. “What the hell?”
Eckers turned to run out of the alley. B’ya or not, this was too freaky, and it was completely killing whatever buzz he still had left. He heard a growl behind him and turned to see the lights fly at him.
Four sets of claws ripped through his clothes to the soft skin beneath. He clawed back for dear life. He didn’t have time to scream before the beast’s teeth sank into his throat and crushed his voice box. Then the beast reared back and tore Ecker’s throat out.
A few moments later, when the beast was gone, Ecker’s Fleck-tainted blood crept across the alley floor into the dark shadows of the Big City night.

"I went and had a look. It's obvious that you're putting a lot of energy and enthusiasm into this, one of the big new good ideas of the web. I hope that it's a success and grows into something huge. Thanks for thinking of me. Cheers."
- Paul Cornell - Novelist and Doctor Who Writer (Family of Blood, Human Nature, Father's Day)

"Very ambitious, and professional-looking. Now you need to find a way to film it (don't we all)." - Alan Dean Foster - Sci-Fi/Fantasy author. Visit his website

"...very well-written...carry on."
Gene Brewer - Author of K-PAX

"In the Big City, you'll find crime and corruption, not to mention race riots between Elves and Dwarfs. You see, BC is basically Lord of the Rings-meets-every-single-cop-show imaginable, and revolves around five hard-bitten characters: detective Adam "Stack Fury" Forray, PI Robert "Smiles" Johnson, Stack?s partner John "Needless Action" D'yen, Smiles' operative Charlie Pickens, and Charlie's love interest journalist Laura Medrano.
The stories are episodic in nature and use the different races, such as humans, elves and goblins, to put a spin on issues and events -- for example, there's an echo of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict within the longstanding Elf and Goblin feud. It's this link that makes the stories believable and, more important, a fun read."

"Big City defies categorization by merging fantasy with crime drama, and does so with a powerful narrative voice, well-defined characterizations and a dark sense of humor. You'll suspend your disbelief thanks to the producers' skills in creating a uniquely colorful world."
Kira - Editor EpiGuide.com

"Awesome, simply awesome...! I loved the characters, they were very colorful, and you managed to pack a lot of imagery in your scenes without making them overly verbose. As a result, your story had a wonderful pace and kept me riveted thoughout. I also liked the fact that it had several plot twists-- everytime I thought I had figured out the ending, you proved me wrong in the next section! That doesn't commonly happen anymore in fiction, either offline or on!
This is easily professional-quality work. It felt like something that would work well as a high-tension TV series, except that TV studios tend to water down stuff like this until it sucks. Keep me posted when you get new episodes and if the quality remains as high as this last one, you should consider getting them collected together and published; it's certainly of professional quality! Heck, I've been waiting for ANYTHING original in the fantasy genre for years, and this is certainly refreshing!
Good luck with the new episodes!"
Thanks greatly!

Big City's Blurbs |
About me:
A brooding, smoking, hard-drinking private investigator with a flair for giving people nick-names. His often reckless junior partner with a mysterious past that both unfolds like a flower and erupts like a volcano. An investigative journalist who battles her own divided loyalities, wanting to both fight the good fight and report it. A brilliant police detective who works to keep his mind focused by building small, haphazard desktop sculptures and shuffling cards. His half-human partner who is driven by his sense of justice and the constant battle between his human and elf sides to fight the good fight by any means necessary.
These are our heroes.
They live in Big City.
Each episode of Big City follows the lives of these heroes as they fight crime and injustice in world where murder and drugs mix with racial tensions between Goblins and Elves. Where Vampires, once misunderstood and feared, have started the long process of integration into society. Where the police once kept witches and wizards on the payroll as consultants. A place where werewolves are no longer killed, they're treated. A place where the magical is mundane and beings of all kinds must learn to work, live, love and fight temptation together. A place called Big City.
First and foremost Big City is a drama. Love, hate, crime, these things are universal and they exist in this fantasy metropolis as they do in our world.
Created by Eric Schwartz and Greg Twait for Boundary Waters Media
