We started playing together as a result of Drew at Salty's (Former bar in Wilmywood and fave-o-rite hangout of the band) as he is a big fan of Robert Earl Keen and Tommy knew a bunch of his songs, Drew suggested that he come in on Thurs nights and do a couple of sets. He told his buddy Bert about it and Bert completely schmoozed his way into the deal! After Drew applied some pressure for the duo to come up with a name...in about 30 minutes and three Tequila shots later (thanx Becky!!) "Big Dog & Catfish Willie" was born! It seems to be a constant battle as to who is gonna be Catfish Willie (we both figure that he is the "cool guy") and it's just not fair that Tommy is the cool guy...all of the time. So, we usually have to settle this dispute with a sometimes violent game of rock, paper, scissors. Tommy usually wins (don't tell Bert I said that, it makes him crazy!)
We are also members of another group, The 360 Degrees, which plays a lot of "party music"...Motown, R&B, 80's rock, etc.
www.the360degrees.com. We love that group, but BD&CW gives us the opportunity to play alot of the music that we REALLY love. Stuff like Robert Earl Keen, James Taylor, Jack Johnson, Barenaked Ladies, Van Morrison, The Band, John Mayer and we throw in some obscure stuff by Elton John, Crowded House, Todd Snider, Paul Thorn, etc. We absolutely love it when folks come out to a Big Dog show and know all of the words and help us sing along...that's the kinda stuff that makes it fun for US!! But it's not a fan requirement. If you would just like to come out and sit on your lazy patootie and drink...fine with us, just yell real loudly at the end of every song and it will all work out. We are very fortunate to have some really talented friends that sit in with us from time to time. Grecie Brown on drums (is very much becoming a huge part of our shows) Chili Dawg on electric guitar (we love ya Buddy!), Wichita on electric guitar (damn cool "half-full beer bottle" slide player) and last but not least, Coolwater Slim on electric guitar (guitar wizard extraordinaire...he can fit "Low Rider" into every solo he plays!..it's uncanny) Anywayz if you get the opportunity to come out to a Big Dog & Catfish Willie show, don't hesitate! The one thing we can promise you is that you'll have fun and we have been told, literally... "at least you don't SUCK"! Well at least there's that!
