BIG JOHN BATES has been called “one of Vancouver’s most notorious musicians” by Toronto’s Globe & Mail. In 2011 Bates turned his focus back to guitar and new singer/upright bassist/cellist BRANDY BONES took over the spotlight. Writing together they spun western Americana together with dark post-rock to create a sound they call Americana Noir. This lead to a European record deal with Rookie Records, a publishing deal with Edition & BJB having a song considered for Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”.
Ms Bones fronts the band with a mind-blowing stage presence and gymnastic performance. She transitions from bow to slapping the upright like it owes her money, hefting her Hofner over her shoulder and offstage. Her voice ranges from creeping soprano to a scream in a single song while John selectively adds his baritone growl to his signature blues-driven guitar style. Propelling the show JT MASSACRE (ex-Real Mackenzies) handles percussion like no one since John Bonham – and includes a tympani solo that has sparks shooting off his vintage Sonors.
After the April 2012 release of the Headless Fowl EP, the band played North America with Murder By Death in Spring and Slim Cessna’s Auto Club in Summer. Following the release of the Battered Bones LP in September 2012, BJB was voted the top performance at the Halifax Pop Explosion 2012 and headlined their own club tour of Europe in Winter.
Big John Bates also released two videos in 2012 produced by Hora Morior- an epic Western-styled scenario for Taste the Barrel and a dark vignette for the short instrumental Amerkin. Both albums were mixed and mastered by Robert Ferbrache, the man that pioneered the Denver sound and they were recorded in Vancouver (Todd Simko – Xavier Rudd) & in Nashville (Mark Robertson – Legendary Shack Shakers).

John Bates was the original singer for Annihilator and co-wrote their first two critically acclaimed albums. He sharpened his Gretsch with the Voodoo Dollz; chiseling out a 10-year career and playing over a thousand shows across North America & Europe. BJB has been featured on Battlestar Galactica, A&E; Discovery Channel; Bizarre Magazine; Tattooage; and at festivals across Europe and North America while his songs have been in a score of movies and TV shows. The Headless Fowl EP was featured in every Hot Topic store across the USA for 2012.
Big John Bates has played with notables such as Andre Williams, Murder By Death, the Blasters, Slim Cessna, Supersuckers, the Belrays, New Bomb Turks, Koko Taylor, Dex Romweber, Solomon Burke, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, US Bombs & T-Model Ford.
