The Bijlmer Steelband Kids are an inititiative of foundation 'St. Steeldrums Bijlmer.' This foundation provides free music lessons on steelpans to primary school kids in Amsterdam, mostly in the Bijlmer. Currently we work with two schools , Bijmerdrie and Kruispunt, and offer classes as after school activity, a so-called 'brede (= enhanced) school' project.
Our orchestra consists of advanced students from these lessons. They have been playing together in this line up since a year, though some kids are participating already much longer.
To play concerts is one of the great incentives for the kids to join the band, and they have already showed their talent at various world music festivals and other occasions.
The teacher and musical director of the band is Frauke Lühning. She draws a lot of inspiration from the experiences she made as a member of the steelorchestras WITCO Desperadoes and Phase II Pan Groove in Trinidad & Tobago and tries to establish this rich culture in the Netherlands.

De Bijlmer Steelband Kids bestaan uit kinderen die aan de na-schoolse activiteit 'steelpan spelen' van hun basisschool hebben deelgenomen en zo enthousiast waren dat zij door wilden gaan. In de afgelopen jaren heeft de band al vele successen geoogst; de kids waren finalisten van de Amsterdamse Muziekscholenprijs 2004 en 2005 en speelden in December 2004 tijdens de viering‚ 50 jaar Statuut Koninkrijk der Nederlanden’ in de Ridderzaal in Den Haag. In het voorjaar van 2005 hebben zij op diverse festivals opgetreden (o.a. Dunya-festival in Rotterdam, Amsterdam Roots, Torentijdfestival in de Bijlmer) ook zijn zij al diverse keren op TV geweest. In 2007 speelden zij op de Music Meeting in Nijmegen. In November 2007 mochten zij voor de gala-avond ter gelegenheid van 60 jaar Wereldomroep Prinses Máxima en vele andere prominente gasten voor het Concertgebouw muzikaal begroeten.
De groep bestaat nu uit 15 kinderen in de leeftijd van 9 – 14 jaar. Het zijn kinderen van Ghanese, Surinaamse en Antilliaanse ouders. De groep staat onder leiding van Frauke Lühning.
