  • Bio

I've been writing, producing, singing and playing music for longer than I care to remember. My first professional outfit was The Late Show (look that up in your history books and you'll see what I mean) followed by a lot of bands, The Watusi Brothers, Happyhead, The Mishmash Band, 7Kings and Bloke to name but a few. I've session sung with lots of people, Robert Plant, Kylie Minogue, Mick Ronson and World Party being just a handful of them. I've played guitar for different bands and in 2000 did just that, touring The States with Wang Chung. I got interested in performing my own stuff again about five years ago and, in 2003 released the album 'Bill Clift' on Proper Records (PRPCD 15) becoming a proud stable-mate of Nick Lowe, Dann Penn and Spooner Oldham and Richard Thompson, among others. My new album, 'Smokescreen', is out now. No distribution but I'm selling it at gigs and hoping to put it up for sale on-line soon. I've already picked up some plays on The Danny Baker Show, on BBC Radio London and Phill Jupitus on BBC Radio 6. I think my biggest strength is songwriting. I've had deals with, Stiff Music, All Boys Music, Proper Music and Vigin/EMI Music, picking up several gold discs along the way. I'm presently looking for a way to get my songs to anyone who's looking for a bit of decent music to perform and record. Any ideas? Hope you enjoy the stuff. Let me know what you think. Billx

Bill does lead and backing vocals, guitars, some bass guitar and a bit of keyboard. Matt Percival plays guitar and sings. Al Richardson is on harmonica. Chris Morgan; double bass and vocals. This is usually the outfit that plays the live shows. Sometimes live, but more often appearing in the studio, we have, Gary Brady on bass guitar, keyboards, programming and production. Guy Whitby on drums and backing vocals. Quaff(aka Geoff Glen) also on backing vocals. The full personnel is too numerous to mention but I'd like to thank John O'Niell for his recent horn arrangements and sax/flute playing.
  • Influences

Again, too numerous to mention. However, here's a bit of a list in no particular order (apart from The Beatles who are most definitely my biggest influence)So... The Fab Four, Kinks, Stones, Beach Boys, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Meters, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Led Zep, Ella Fitzgerald, Bob Marley, Peter Cook, Little Feat, Frank Zappa, Elvis (Presley&Costello), Bowie, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchel, Chet Baker, Carl Marsh, Spidermouse, Buzzcocks, Hank Williams, Lieber&Stoller, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana and Happy Mondays
  • Sounds Like

The Beatles, Crowded House, Ron Sexsmith, Myracle Brah, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Norah Jones etc. etc.
