ISSUES I CARE ABOUT
Withdrawing our Troops from Iraq – Our brave men and women in uniform have done everything they can in Iraq, and it’s time for the Iraqi government to take charge of the country’s future. I will be a strong advocate for a firm withdrawal timeline that brings our troops home safely, quickly, and with honor.
Health Care Reform – All Americans must have access to affordable, quality health care, especially our children. As a member of Congress, I vow not to take taxpayer-funded health care until we have ensured that all American children have access to health care.
Improving Services for Veterans – We as a nation need to do a better job providing for those who have served and sacrificed on our behalf, especially by improving health care services, job training opportunities, and services for homeless Veterans.
Education Reform – Teachers need better pay and less bureaucracy; schools with high non-English-speaking or special needs populations need a level playing field; and standardized exams must not be the only incentive for students.
Jobs & Economic Development – We must focus on project-based local economic development, which allows communities to decide what they do best and provides them the tools to get started.
Alternative Energy Development – Investing in research and development for alternative energies here in Southern New Mexico is critical for the future of our environment and for the creation of new jobs.

About me:
Southern New Mexico needs a new direction. Every candidate talks about change, but I am committed to bringing a specific kind of change to Washington — one that focuses on results. It is time for a new generation of leaders who are dedicated to getting things done for the people, not playing political games or pandering to special interests.
I will work hard both in Washington and here at home, keeping southern New Mexico as my first priority.
BACKGROUND
* Doña Ana County Commissioner (and former Commission Chairman)
* Executive Director, New Mexico Rural Development Response Council
* Undergraduate degree from New Mexico State University (BA in Govt)
* Graduate degree from Harvard University (Masters in Public Policy)
* Father is a retired Army Lt. Colonel; mother is a retired nurse
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
* Negotiated a settlement between the County and the City of Sunland Park, allowing for the development of new jobs and affordable housing opportunities.
* Strengthened the County Ethics Policy to make sure that public officials are held accountable for their actions.
* Brought county health care entities together to cut costs and allow for more resources to go to the people who need them.
* Increased pay for County Sheriffs.
* Established the County’s first paid firefighting staff.
