    Bill Sammich's Interests
General

Outside of my family and friends, my interests mostly revolve around music. I enjoy performing on my trumpet in rock bands, drum corps, marching band, jazz band, wind ensemble, brass ensembles, you name it.

Anytime I get to compose or arrange music is always a pleasure. I mostly write for marching bands / drum corps but also do some indoor work. I have written and arranged hundreds of tunes through the years for various high school, univeristy and drum corps marching groups. Some of the songs I still have recordings of are sampled on my music player. Check them out!

I marched drum corps with the Railmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Omaha, Nebraska and with the Empire Statesmen Drum Corps in Rochester, New York. In the Railmen I started with the corps in 1983 and marched (less two summers) till my age out year in 1991. Then I worked as a member of the brass staff and arranger 1992 till the corps folded in 1995. I marched with the Statesmen in 1994, when the Railmen could not field a corps for the first time, and had a blast

I currently play in a dance rock band called "JammSammich" We play a wide variety of dance floor oriented tunes. Check out our website through my friends links.

Outside of my music interests, I also enjoy science fiction (the more science the better), comedy, etc. I read when I can.

Track One: Monty Python Sing Along – UNK Marching Band
My love of Monty Python and twisted sense of humor led to this arrangement of this tune as the parade tune for the 1994 season. Now picture this, the University Marching Band in the homecoming parade playing this song right behind the car carrying the Chancellor of the University. Lots of fun!! For those “In the Know” an “I Can’t Believe They Are Playing That Song” experience and for those “Not In the Know,” it’s a nice little march.

Track Two: Chitins Con Carne - Neutron Bone
Live track from my college band. Neutron Bone was a large band with a horn section (of course) but to give the horns a break (and for some variety) we did some tunes sans section. All members of this band were from the UNK School of Music (incidentally everyone in the band was a trumpet player except the drummer and bone player in this version of the band). This is a direct off the board recording but you can still hear everything more or less.

Track Three: God Bless the Child - Neutron Bone
This earlier recording of the band covering the standard recorded for demo purposes. This was our first attempt at mixing, etc. Very cool to be in the studio and learn. If you listen carefully you can here someone exclaim “YES!” at the very end of the track. We were having fun.

Track Four: Kiss - JammSammich
This is for my friends who haven't heard what I've been up to lately. This is an off the board recording. I'm playing trumpet through an auto-wah filter which provides a different sound.

Track Five: UNK Fight Song – UNK Marching Band
One of my highpoints in college was getting to rework the University Fight Song. Brought it up into a brighter key and made it more “peppy”. This recording is from 1995 Band Extravaganza. This version is still in use today.

Track Six: Crusin’ For A Bluesin’ – 1991 Railmen
Huge part of the first half of my life was Drum and Bugle Corps. This is the opener from my “age-out” year. The age limit for competitive junior corps is 21. I started in 1983 and after aging out in 1991 stayed on as a staff member, till the corps folded for financial reason after the 1995 season. I also marched Senior Corps with the Empire Statesmen from Rochester, NY. Anyway, this is our version of the Maynard Ferguson tune. I’m doing the soprano (that’s a bugle, not voice) solos and high register solo at the end.

Track Seven: Wonderful Tonight – Neutron Bone
I know, I know. It’s old and overdone. But I always liked how the horn arrangement turned out for this song, and remember this was over 10 years ago, so it wasn’t all that tired yet.

Track Eight: Marching Band Clips – UNK Marching Band
Not wanting to completely bore anyone who happens on my site who isn’t marching music inclined, I’ve smashed some clips of three tunes where I happen to write and perform on also. The first is an arrangement of the Latin standard, Malaga. Second Clip is from my arrangement of the Sky Ryders Drum Corps Version of “Over The Rainbow”. This one features a trumpet duet with the full band blowing behind. Last clip is from a rock pregame show I did featuring the members of Neutron Bone, Fleetwood Mac Style. I put in a clip of “Does Anybody Know What Time It Is” by Chicago, and yes, that’s me singing, sorry….

Track Nine: Nutmeg Jubilee – UNK Marching Band
This is an original tune adapted from a song I did for the Nebraska Music Educators Convention performance. Again, something other than what you would normally here out of me from ‘da Sammich.

Track Ten: Scream Machine - UNK Blue Notes
Here's another one by request. First, little background on the Blue Notes may help put this in context. Going to school in Nebraska, most of the people in band came from small towns/schools. The ones that were local would go back to play with the high school pep bands for fun. We ended up taking around quite a group at times. So, I thought there might be a market for an ensemble. I obtained permission from the director of bands to put together a traveling pep band, to represent the school. We put out a flyer offering to come perform at schools for their basketball games, giving their students a night off. The first couple of performances went so well, we expanded running clinics for the schools students in conjunction with our performances. The university provided the transportation and equipment. It was a great tool for the band recruiting because we were reaching thousands of people who may not otherwise be exposed to what UNK music had to offer. These are some tunes we demoed out to advertise the group. This is one I got to solo on, kind of raw, but it does have some high screaming and so was fun to play.

Track Eleven: Carry On My Wayward Son - UNK Marching Band
This was an arrangement I had fun doing. Threw in 4way split mello feature. Side story, when I arranged this I was living in Rochester, NY with Greg Wiese (Railmen, Statesmen) and Ken Brooks and Dave Bruni from the Statesmen. Greg and I were talking "old school" drum corps and ended up on the Sky Ryders 85 Wizard of Oz show. If you listen to the mello book, I ended up sticking the melody from "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as a counter melody in the chorus. Hee Hee!

Track Twelve: Bohemian Rhapsody - UNK Marching Band
This one will take some explaining. The UNK Marching program typically does a new show each game, (Some schools do the same show all season). So, when looking for a recording of your arrangement you pretty much get what you get. This tune I had two recordings of, the live show and the Marching Band Extravaganza Concert. During the live take, there was an issue with the electric guitar amp. Water somehow got in so there was not much besides static. So that take didn't really reflect my intention for the piece, but there was one part that sounded great without the guitar. During the Extravaganza Concert the guitar was TOO LOUD, but it was better than no guitar. To explain my vision here... The band left the field during the opening frontline feature with guitar and formed a parade block on the track, directly in front of the stands (the drum major was IN the stands) In the block, the band sang the intro section then, horns up, Park and Blow at point blank range. After getting used to hearing the band from 20 yards away, this was much more up close and personal. For the trumpet geeks I go up to a double "D" on the last note. Yes that's the D above double "C." High note trumpet geek moment.

Track Thirteen: Bells of Notre Dame - UNK Marching Band
Even though the recording itself is bad with pops and hiss, I still thought these arrangements were cool. It's fun to look back at some of these arrangements, because I would be asked to arrange tunes that couldn't be bought over the counter since the movie was just released. Then the next season there are 100 arrangements of the same tunes. Here are my arrangements from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Track Fourteen: Heaven's Light / Hellfire - UNK Marching Band
Part two in the Hunchback Show. Used a flugel line in this show. I like 'em outside.

Track Fifteen: Out There - UNK Marching Band
Hunchback part 3

Track Sixteen: Chorale - UNK Marching Band
After the Railmen Senior Corps season ended in 1994, I went to march with the Empire Statesmen Senior Drum and Bugle Corps from Rochester, NY. An AWESOME experience. Great people, great drum corps, LOTS of history. Fun times. Anyway, the Chorale and Old Man River were from the 1994 Statesmen World Champion Season. I took Donnie Allen's KILLER corps book (I love that East Cost Sound) and adapted it for marching band. UNK Marching Band, Statesmen Style.

Track Seventeen: Old Man River - UNK Marching Band
I got to play Donnie's Allen's Award winning Soprano Bugle Solo in this one (on trumpet).

Track Eighteen: Bermuda Nights - UNK Marching Band
I Wrote this right after coming back from Bermuda with the Empire Statesmen Drum and Bugle Corps. The tune was written for Devlin Publishing (Al Murray, Suncoast Sound, Empire Statesmen, Dynasty), written as a high school level tune. Moving melody, just a fun tune.

Track Nineteen: Give It One - UNK Marching Band
My arrangement of the Maynard Ferguson Tune, and I got to play Maynard. Fun for me!

Track Twenty: Hey Jude – Neutron Bone
Posting this for Jason (Doogie), who had a huge drum solo at the end. I remember him setting up his full kit (it was pretty new at the time) for recording. Lots of toms, 2 hi-hats… it was crazy. We would often close shows with this tune, and let Jason go and the crowd would get silly. Fun for us, anyway.

i know you're not in the area anymore, but it's too bad you can't be involved in Statesmen's 25th. a lot of the alumni are coming back. and their doing this huge alumni thing at the Rochester show for those who can't commit to the season... you should think about coming out for it. I can get you info if ya want.
